Pope's Poll: a heavenly time for top Catholic hoops teams

Postby The Pope » Mon Mar 14, 2016 8:54 pm

Forty-two Catholic colleges and universities compete in NCAA Division I basketball -- here’s a divinely inspired poll showing how they stacked up on the hardwood at the end of the 2015-16 regular season. Rankings reflect games played through March 12, Selection Sunday, a Holy Day of Obligation for all college hoop fans. Congratulations to the 18 Catholic teams that made it to Hoops Heaven, AKA post-season play -- ten to the NCAA tournament, three to the NIT, three to the CBI, and two to the CIT:

1. Villanova (29-5) NCAA
2. Xavier (27-5) NCAA
3. Seton Hall (25-8) NCAA
4. St. Joseph's (27-7) NCAA
5. Dayton (25-7) NCAA
6. Notre Dame (21-11) NCAA
7. Gonzaga (26-7) NCAA
8. Providence (23-10) NCAA
9. St. Mary's (27-5) NIT
10. St. Bonaventure (22-8) NIT
11. Iona (22-10) NCAA
12. Creighton (18-14) NIT
13. Siena (21-12) CBI
14. Marquette (20-13) (Bid-worthy but gave up tournaments for Lent.)
15. Fairfield (19-13) CIT
16. Fordham (17-13) CIT
17. Duquesne (16-16) CBI
18. Holy Cross (14-19) NCAA
19. Seattle (14-16) CBI (Slipped in somehow when St. Peter was sleeping.)

In Purgatory (for at least another year): Detroit, Incarnate Word, and San Francisco.

Hanging In Hoops Hell: Boston College, Canisius, DePaul, Georgetown, LaSalle, Loyola (IL), Loyola (MD), Loyola-Marymount, Manhattan, Mt. St. Mary's, Portland, San Diego, St. Francis (NY), St. Francis (PA), St. John's, St. Louis, St. Peter's, Sacred Heart and Santa Clara.

"Francis’ Flop" (worst Catholic team in America for 2015-16): Niagara (7-25).
