Pope declares March "a heavenly time for top Catholic hoops teams"

Forty-two Catholic colleges and universities compete in NCAA Division I basketball -- here’s a divinely inspired poll showing how they stack up on the hardwood. Rankings reflect games played through March 12, Selection Sunday (a Holy Day of Obligation for all college hoop fans).

Congratulations to the 18 Catholic teams that ascended to Hoops Heaven, AKA post-season play -- 12 to the NCAA tournament, four to the CIT, and two to the CBI:

1. Villanova (31-3) NCAA
2. Gonzaga (32-1) NCAA
3. Notre Dame (25-9) NCAA
4. Creighton (25-9) NCAA
5. St. Mary's (28-4) NCAA
6. Dayton (24-7) NCAA
7. Marquette (19-12) NCAA
8. Xavier (21-13) NCAA
9. Seton Hall (21-11) NCAA
10. Providence (20-12) NCAA
11. St. Bonaventure (20-12) *
12. Iona (22-12) NCAA
13. Loyola (IL) (18-14) *
14. San Francisco (20-12) CBI
15. St. Peter's (19-13) CIT
16. Canisius (18-15) CIT
17. Fairfield (16-14) CIT
18. Mt. St. Mary's (19-15) NCAA
19. St. Francis (PA) (16-16) CIT
20. Loyola (MD) (15-16) CBI

(*Bid-worthy but gave up CBI and CIT tournaments for Lent.)

In Purgatory (for at least another year): Georgetown, LaSalle and Santa Clara.

Hangin' In Hoops Hell: Boston College, DePaul, Detroit Mercy, Duquesne, Fordham, Holy Cross, Incarnate Word, Loyola-Marymount, Manhattan, Niagara, Portland, San Diego, St. Louis, St. John's, St. Joseph's, Sacred Heart, Seattle and Siena.

"Francis’ Flop" (worst Catholic team in America for the 2016-17 season): St. Francis (NY) (4-27).
