An article evaluating Fort Wayne's readiness to join the Horizon League, says they have work to do:

An article outlining the Summit League's options following IUPUI's departure, one would be to go after Grand Canyon:

And then Grand Canyon can join HL in a year or two when Oakland goes to A-10 or MVC I suppose. I was just going to say at this point Horizon and Summit should just merge and get it over with and kick out the three worst programs (to be at 16), but then I realized WE might be in that three.

Tacitus, like you I have many issues with a for profit university joining our ranks, but they have a religious affiliation and became for profit out of necessity to survive. They have cash and a program that is electric right now, the money and attention could allow them to be actually a benefit for the rest of the institutions in the league.

I still can't wrap my head around a for-profit school in the NCAA. (Are there others?) I went to the Grand Canyon website and it's jarring to see a link for a stock quote and a list of all the docs on profit margin and the like. Call me traditional, if you must ......

Just listened to an interview with the IUPUI men's basketball coach. He talked about the tough travel going to Summit schools, i.e., connecting flights coupled with bus to get to most places, waking up at 4:00 in the morning to take cheaper flights, missing class time, tough for family and fans to go to road games, etc. The Horizon as currently configured is truly a "bus league," and adding Robert Morris and Fort Wayne would solidify that important positive aspect. That could be part of the brand the HL builds on, i.e., Midwest universities situated in relatively close proximity, comprehensive academic programs, located in some decent large metro areas to attend school or visit (Indy, Chicago, Milwaukee, Cincinnati/Dayton, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, etc.).

Adding Bob Morris and FW would also solidify low major status for the Horizon League, rogo, removing any doubt that last Friday's addition of IUPUI didn't already do that. Building the brand?? They've been using most of these same cities' names since 1981 to theoretically build the brand. Remember the Midwestern Cities Conference? And where did that strategy take us?

Fort Wayne's athletic director publicly expressed interest in pursuing another conference affiliation in a June 28 radio interview. Here's the quote:

"We are proud members of the Summit League, but we are compelled to look at other opportunities," said IPFW athletics director Kelly Harley-Hutton on 1380-AM in Fort Wayne.

A different position taken by Belmont's MBB coach, who says they're happy being in the OVC and don't see much advantage in moving to the MVC or other league:

https://m.soundcloud.com/user-232619420 ... conference

Says Belmont is unwilling to commit financially to what the MVC would demand, and believes that it's a one-bid league going forward.

If the MVC going forward is a one bid league, the advantages in playing in that league are somewhat subdued and considering they lost their cash cow Wichita State that won games in the NCAA Tourney every year, in a few years the money flowing from that will dry up for the league, unless some other school steps up big time. Don't get me wrong I would rather us play Loyola, Evansville and so on rather than UIC or Youngstown State, but if we can't win in our league it doesn't make sense to pay money to go to another league that wont help us with our chances to go to the dance or financially improve our position.

A long article analyzing Robert Morris' options for a new league home, focuses on the Horizon and MAAC as most likely destinations:

I would love to have RMU in our league, I think with what they are looking to do right now might be a perfect time to get them to come to the Horizon, if they improve in basketball with all of the investment in the facilities could put a damper on Horizon looking attractive in the future if it looks attractive at all right now. I also think if we add RMU and possibly Murray State once again if we can convince Murray State to join than we have the potential to be a better conference than the MVC.

For those worried that adding Grand Canyon would involve too much travel for our non-revenue sports, I note that the men's soccer team plays at St. Mary's of California on Saturday, and women's soccer plays at Northern Arizona on Friday and, ahem, Grand Canyon on Sunday.

P.S. Both soccer teams are off to good starts, the men at 2-0 and the women at 2-0-1.

Haven't read anything of late on Horizon expansion post-IUPUI, but here's an article about Grand Canyon selling out their entire home schedule:

The Horizon should act now to grab GCU, but it won't.

I still disagree. We don't need a for-profit school in the HL.

Oddly enough, Kampe's hair just barely fits inside the Grand Canyon.

Why should we care that Grand Canyon is a for-profit institution?

Because a college should be focused on the student (and the Athletic Department on the student-athlete) not on turning a profit. It should be an educational institution, not a company focused on getting lots of government issued student loans.

Yes, there are exceptions and Grand Canyon might be one, but if they are then they're in the minority.
