65 Great Moments at Calihan Hall

Postby Rogobob77 » Mon Sep 11, 2017 4:32 pm

Yesterday, Detroit Mercy Titans' Twitter feed began a commemoration of "65 great moments at Calihan Hall." The activity was initiated 65 days from the onset of the 2017-18 hoops season and celebrates the arena's 65th anniversary as home for the basketball Titans. Sunday's tweet was about the groundbreaking for the building, today's concerned dedication of Dick Vitale Court. The University has developed a 65th anniversary of Calihan Hall logo that is showing up on social media postings and appeared on tee-shirts that I believe were provided to incoming freshmen. It is clear that the University's branding approach for athletics is embracing Detroit's College Team's venerable arena, IMO a smart marketing move.

I'm interested in seeing what the school plans for Bob Calihan's 100th birthday next year.

I sure hope they include Spencer Haywood's first game. Watching him crush the backboard was unbelievable. Too bad we didn't have a big screen and instant replay in those days.

Ask and you shall receive: Today's tweeted great moment in Calihan Hall lore recalls when NBA Hall of Famer Spencer Haywood broke the backboard vs. Aquinas in 1968.

December 10, 1960: In overtime, 9th ranked Detroit tops 3rd ranked Indiana on Tom Villemure's jumper from the corner just before the buzzer.

Wow - that was a blast from the past. Where did Tom go after he stopped coaching at Grand Valley. I think he left there some time in the late 1990s. He had quite a bit of success. I remember the Lakers winning 20 games almost every season when I lived in Grand Rapids.

How about 1973, Titans drub Michigan in Vitale's first season behind Owen Wells' 38 points.

I nominate every jump shot taken by Turono Anderson from just over the half court line in 1976-77. He played his game from well beyond today's NBA 3-point arc. It was always hilarious to see Vitale's reaction.

Also, the 1970 home game against Notre Dame led by Austin Carr in which we played box and one against Carr with Jim Calucchia guarding Carr and frustrating the All-American for much of the game unfortunately won by ND 95-93. Carr averaged 38 PPG that season.

Today's tweeted great moment in Calihan Hall history is unrelated to the Titans. It recalls when the Detroit Spirits played their games in the venue during the 1984-85 season, including a game seven CBA championship match. I attended that game and still have the program as a souvenir of the evening.

As someone who grew up a couple of thousand miles from Calihan, this game my freshman year was one of my first exposures to the Titans. Great game, and I remember Calucchia shutting down Carr. Very exciting.

I've only been attending games for a relatively short time. Some great moments for me, but a lot more really good moments. Even a dismal loss can be good if you spend the game with people you like. And that happens a lot to me. I've never once left Calihan Hall and thought I'd wasted my time. Nevertheless, some new great moments would be welcome.

Today's "Great Moments at #CalihanHall" recalls the University of Detroit's 115-43 win over Western Ontario. The 72-point victory margin on January 11, 1964 is a Titan record. Dick Dzik paced U-D with 30 points.

True story about the Old Dominion Game, which was part of the Coca Cola Classic that Coach K (our Coach K, first womens coach at U-D) put together:
I was the freshman Sports Editor at the Varsity News in 1979 (got lucky, the spot opened up in my 2nd week on campus in September and I was offered the job after writing a couple stories). Anyway, Coach K and Coca Cola had a Press Conference at lunch hour day of the game at a nice hotel in Southfield. Old Dominion was the first serious womens program, and back then it wasn't even the NCAA yet for the womens game. But we had a good turnout at the Presser and Old Dominion brought their head coach and Nancy Lieberman, a New York street fighter of a PG (tall, about 5-11, kinda the Magic Johnson of the womens game back then). She was the first womens basketball star. Nancy was very mature for her age and spoke at the presser (she was either a junior or a senior at the time). I was a commuter so I drove myself to the Presser in my first car, a tiny little Fiat that always broke down. After the Presser, the U-D SID asked me if I would drive Nancy back to campus. So of course, I did. Nervous little freshman in his first car, driving the most famous female basketball player in the world back to campus. Then, the new Editor-in-Chief John Valentine, who had been the Sports Editor until he got promoted after our Editor defected for a job at the Free Press (John then asked me to take his place as Sports Editor because he liked those first 2 stories i did), challenged Nancy to a game of one-on-one on the south basket of Calihan. She tore him up without even trying. It wasn't even a game. She scored at will. He popped jumpers from outside or got stuffed inside. They were about the same height. IIt was a pretty cool day.

Coach K often talks very fondly of the Coca Cola classic and the length that AD Dick Vitale went to for the women's team to arrange for that event.

Today's Calihan Hall great moment takes us back to last year when the Titan WBB team topped nationally-ranked Green Bay.
