Detroit Free Press feature on top Michigan college players

Postby Rogobob77 » Sun Oct 29, 2017 11:54 am

The Detroit Free Press presents a bracket (that has two regions named for all-time Titan legends) in an attempt to determine the best Michigan college basketball players since 1979.

Ray Jr. and Willie Green made the field of 32, but inexcusably Rashad Phillips didn’t make the cut:

Total fraud to not have RP on there. His resume speaks for itself but reminder he was All American, voted best HL player ever, etc et al.

Then again, its meant to get clicks and the 'tournament' is sure to try to get that traffic via UM/MSU fans trying to outvote one another.

Rashad is one of the top 10 college players in the state since the Magic years. This list is fraudulent. And JJ should be on it. Mateen Cleaves (who did NOTHING at the NBA level) is a #1 seed. When they were respective leaders of their squads, we beat MSU straight up repeatedly. Look it up. JJ led our team the way Cleaves led his. JJ went on to an NBA career that was better than Ceaves' career. This is just wrong....

I can't denigrate the players on the list already, there's alot of All American's that have passed thru this state. Having said that, the resume of Rashad exceeds many of the guys on here including even Willie, Ray Jr, and Felder. Not to mention a few others.

Awards:
Conference Newcomer of the Year
3-time First Team All Conference selection
2-time Conference Player of the Year
Honorable All American
Frances Pomeroy Naismith Winner (best player in nation under 6 feet)
Number retired by UDM
Named best player of all time in HL

Team Accomplishments:
2 NCAA tourney appearances
2 NCAA tourney wins (over #5 UCLA, over #4 St John's)
1 NIT appearance, advancing to Final Four
2 regular season conference titles, 1 conference tourney title

Personal Stats:
Held HL conference All Time Most Points mark up until this past season
I won't recite here, but his name is all over the top of the Titan record books for single seasons and career. He could shoot from 3, from the wing, from the FT line. He dished the ball. He racked up steals. It's all in the books.

I surely missed some things, and I'm biased because I saw the bulk of his home games and was always amazed at his talent level. Plus, he led his team to WIN. The NIT run to the Final Four may be the most impressive as he led the Titans INTO well known hostile arenas such as UConn and Dayton and carried the team to victories.

Rashad perhaps isn't the #1 player in the state since Magic, but clearly his omission from even being in the top 32 is just, flat, wrong.

If RP3 isn't on the list, I'm not clicking on the link.

Ran in to this looking at stories on freep today. Looking like Steve Honderd of Calvin College is going to win the bracket. Serves them right for putting out a bogus bracket to start with. :)
