Virginia Tech

When: Friday, November 10, 6:00 p.m.
Where: Cassell Coliseum, Blacksburg, VA
TV: ESPN ACC Network Extra
Radio: AM 910

The Titans had their hands full with Wayne State over the weekend, suggesting that our boys may be lucky to find anything to hold on to against Virginia Tech in the regular season opener. While Titans were losing to Tartars, Tech travelled to Columbia, South Carolina and trammelled the Gamecocks 86-67, in a disaster relief exhibition. And as you may recall, USC was a Final 4 team just 8 months ago.

Tech starts the season getting votes in both the AP and Coach's pole, and generally predicted as a middle of the pack ACC team and, therefore, a top 50 team nationally. The Hokies return four rotation players from last year's 22-11 squad that lost to Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA. To that, however, Buzz Williams has added a Top 20 recruiting class that includes three Top 100 high school recruits. If the Titans are going to give the Hokies a hassell, we'll need better guard play. It's embarrassing that Wayne's guards have dominated ours two years running, but the positive thought is that that didn't stop Corey Allen and Josh McFolley from having pretty good seasons last year. Like Wayne (only a whole lot better), Tech is a guard-heavy team--indeed, the roster includes just three players who aren't listed as guards, and one of them stands just 6-5, while another is a former walk-on who played just 5 minutes in the USC exhibition, his first game action since averaging 3.2 ppg for D-II Belmont Abbey during the 2015-16 season. Indeed, I like to think Dre Black got so many minutes against Wayne (more than McFolley or Allen) because Bacari knew he'd need lots of guards against the Hokies.

Tech's exhibition win over South Carolina was led by 6-5 freshman shooting guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, a top 25 recruit and the pride of Buzz Williams' 2017 class. Alexander-Walker had 18 points and 5 rebounds against the Gamecocks. Assuming Williams goes with the same starting lineup, the other starters will be 6-5 redshirt junior Ahmed Hill, 6-2 junior Justin Robinson, 6-4 redshirt senior Devin Wilson, and 6-10, 260 lb. redshirt sophomore Kerry Blackshear. Williams could choose to go with 6-5 senior Justin Bibbs, who averaged 9.2 ppg last season while sinking 43% of his attempts from behind the arc. However, Bibbs did not play in the USC exhibition, with Williams saying only "“I’m upset with him. I told him he couldn’t play. ... I don’t know how long that will last, because I’m disappointed in him.” If he saw Saturday's box scores, he may figure Friday's game is as good as any to continue teaching Bibbs whatever lesson he is trying to teach. Also a question mark is junior guard Chris Clarke, a starter and 11 ppg scorer last year before tearing his ACL halfway through the season. Clarke was medically cleared to play 15 minutes against USC and played exactly that. But as of this writing, Clarke has not been cleared to play in the regular season, and there is still talk that he will be redshirted. My guess is that he's dressed and plays spot duty, but we'll see. Definitely on the sidelines is Ty Outlaw, who replaced Clarke in the lineup last year and is another three point shooter (a sizzling 48.7% last year). Outlaw tore his ACL in a pickup game in the late summer and is out for the season.

If Bibbs and Clarke don't play, look for the first three off the bench to be 6-1 Tyree Jackson, a redshirt freshman, and the other top 100 recruits from the class of 2017, 6-1 guard Wabissa Bede and 6-5 forward P.J. Horne. All three saw double-digit minutes against South Carolina, and Horne was particularly effective before getting himself into early foul trouble.

You can see quickly how this game shapes up. The Gobblers come at you with waves of big, tall guards who can shoot. Even if Bibbs sits again, they've got plenty of three point shooting. Besides Hill (37.3% last year) and Robinson (35.8%), who also runs the point, Alexander-Walker is a deep threat, though he hit just 2 of 7 in his first collegiate game, and Bede is too. Blackshear missed last season with a leg injury, but he was effective (12 points, 8 rebounds, 5-6 from the field) inside in the Gamecock exhibition. Wilson returns to Hokie basketball after redshirting last season so as to play varsity football.

Despite the loss of Outlaw, the possible continued benching of Bibbs, and the questionable status of Clarke, Tech remains a deep and talented bunch. The are extremely efficient on offense, and a very good free throw shooting team. Frankly, the Titans will have to work just to hold them below 90 points. If things go wrong, one can envision the Hokies dropping 110 on Detroit. Mercy!

But let's not concede defeat. The Titan guards are, I think, much better than they showed on Saturday. If you think that players will tend to converge on the mean, that 4-19 Allen/McFolley shooting night may turn into a 14 for 21 shooting night on Friday. Tech's Blackshear will be the biggest body on the floor and likely the best big man, but the Titans will still have an overall size advantage if they choose to use it (i.e. cut back on the three guard lineup; I'm making a statement of fact, not a recommendation). We will need to play better defense than we have for 12 months.

Probable Starters
PG: Justin Robinson, 6-2 Jr. (10.4 ppg, 4.8 apg, 35.8% 3PtFG)
SG: Nickeil Alexander-Walker, 6-5 Fr.
SG: Ahmed Hill, 6-5 RS Jr. (11.4 ppg, 37.3% 3PtFG)
G: Devin Wilson, 6-4 RS Sr. (2.1 ppg, 2.2 apg in 2016)
C: Kerry Blackshear, 6-10 RS Soph. (6.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg in 2016)

Bench
SG: Justin Bibbs, 6-5 Sr. (9.2 ppg, 43.2% 3PtFG) (questionable)
SF: Chris Clarke, 6-6 Jr. (11.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg) (doubtful)
F: P.J. Horne, 6-5 Fr.
G: Wabissa Bede, 6-1 Fr.
G: Tyree Jackson, 6-1 RS Fr.

Finally, before we go, it's worth nothing that the Titans again take on an unusual mascot, and a team that needlessly changed its nickname from something really cool and unique to something insipid. This time, our opponents call themselves "Hokies." What exactly is a "Hokie?" Hokie means nothing. It's a made-up word, developed by a Tech student named Oscar Stull in 1896, for this cheer (which may or may not be in English), as part of a contest:

Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy!
Tech, Tech, VPI
Sol-a-rex, Sol-a-rah
Poly Tech Vir-gin-ia
Ray rah VPI
Team! Team! Team!

And that was the winning cheer. It's horrible to think of what the also-rans were.

Technically, then a Hokie (over the years an "e" was added to Stull's original made up word) is simply a Virginia Tech fan. But remember, the team was originally called the "Gobblers." Why? According to one legend, "the cadets would yell "Coni-a-ah" at the football players [why they would yell that seems to be unreported], who would reply with a resounding turkey gobble." I guess you had to be there. By 1912, Tech's teams were called the Gobblers, and they brought a turkey to each game.

Tech's first mascot, with his handler Floyd "Hard Times" Meade

Over time, Tech fans began to call the bird "Hokie the Turkey," then "Hokie the Bird," and eventually "Hokiebird." It is reported that many Virginians actually believe there is such a thing as a "hokiebird." Sadly, in 1982 Tech abandoned the nickname "Gobblers" for the ridiculous, made up "Hokies."

The Tech mascot circa 1962. We can't beat this guy?

Anyway, it's been a long time since the Titans have had a big upset. It's November. Let's roast some turkeys!

You're in Cooperstown, Commissioner!! Of that there is no doubt. To your already excellent reports you have added this year historical and little known information about both opponents' nicknames thus far and, in so doing, the bar is set quite high for the rest of the year. You didn't mention (though I believe I read it somewhere) that this is the first ever meeting between the schools. The '09 - '10 Titan yearbook agrees that it is as well.
Regarding the outlook for the game, we face this sort of team each time we venture into a Power 5 game. At the same time, I'm glad we do so. Specifically, the bigger clubs have guards the size of forwards with long wingspans and good leaping ability. Their forwards typically are well built, sturdy rebounders who can also score. Va. Tech actually is a football school and has not been well known in basketball. When Buzz Williams arrived, it looked at first as if he'd made a mistake but things soon evened out and they now are somewhat prominent. Our club indeed will have it's hands full Friday.
It's unusual, wouldn't you agree, that an ACC club squares off against an SEC foe in an exhibition game. But, these "disaster relief " tilts were hastily thrown together after the two hurricanes in recent months (three, if you count Puerto Rico). Why the national semifinalist Gamecocks didn't fare better against Va. Tech is not apparent. Regardless, it's a tough game for the Titans.

Dell Curry, who had a long NBA career, is a VaTech alum. A dozen years ago he tried to get his alma mater to sign his son, Steph Curry, to a basketball scholarship but the school declined, saying Steph was too slight.

I expect to see Isaiah Jones play Friday at VaTech. He did play at Akron; but Bacari rested him for the VaTech game. According to BA on the radio last night, we were up by 22 at Akron as our largest lead.

The Ken Pom prediction is VaTech 92. Titans 71.

They only have two guys taller than 6-6. One used sparingly last year. The key to victory, or respectable loss is to use our bigs and go inside until one, or both, get into foul trouble.

In Greek mythology, the Titans were greater even than the gods. They ruled their universe with absolute power! Well that basketball court out there tonight, that's our universe. Let's rule it like Titans! (with apologies to coach boon)

This is probably our best shot at a power 5 win outside of Saint Louis, Michigan and UCLA will beat our a**.
I hope we keep it close

If UCLA has 3 players missing, maybe we have a shot at them?

Uniforms look great on tv. Glad we put the names on the backs of the jerseys again.

Roku/ESPN3 is working great tonight - crystal clear.

Uniforms look great. Team looks awful. Tech on early pace for 130 points. Titans 2-10 from floor. No passing, poor shooting, 2 turnovers in 1st 5 minutes.

Starters were TJones, McFolley, Blackshear, JJJ and Chatman. Five mins in it's Hogan and Allen and Prince. And we're scoring and defending. By

Honestly, this being my first time seeing him since last season, it's worse than I thought. Hogan looked utterly exhausted after 2 minutes of play. They need to put him on a diet and get him to lose 30 pounds. He needs to sit in a sauna everyday and jump rope in full sweats.
