That Gonzaga player who started as equipment manager and made his way on the team scored his first bucket last night. Was cool to watch that.
Detroit Mercy does not provide public comment on internal personnel issues!

Scores from January 12, 2018.

Most of the HL was in action, with a happy result for the home team.

HL Action:
Detroit 93   Youngstown State 91.  Corey and JJ Jr. combined for 66 points and the Titans pulled out another close win at home.  It's a winning streak!   The Penguins contributed by shooting 47% from the free throw line.
Oakland 81   Cleveland State 68.  OU was led by Jalen Hayes with 30 and 11.
IUPUI 67  Green Bay 61.  The Jags even their HL record at 3-3.
UIC 88  Milwaukee 73.  Dikembe Dixson strings together two good games in a row, maybe for the first time this season.

Other Games of Interest:

Butler 94  Marquette 83.  Good win for Jordan and the Dogs.
Penn State 76   Nebraska 74.
Dayton 106   VCU 79.  Detroit Pershing teammates Darrel Davis and Justin Tillman squared off in this one and had quite a battle.  Davis of Dayton won the war, but the individual battle was close.  Tillman finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Davis had 28 points and 9 assists.
Providence 71  DePaul 64.  It's turning into another long season for DePaul.

Scores from January 13, 2018. The Horizon League took the day off, but there were several exciting reminders of why I love college basketball.

Titan Opponents:
Michigan 82 #4 Michigan State 72. Huge win for Michigan, which won't get many opportunities to impress the selection committee is this year's weak Big Ten.

George Mason 86 St. Louis 81. Jaire Grayer, son of Michigan high school stand out Jeff Grayer, scored 25 for GMU. St. Louis is 8-10.

Louisville 94 Virginia Tech 86. Hokies are 13-5.

East Tennessee State 89 VMI 48.

Seattle 77 UMKC 75.

Toledo 93 Central Michigan 82.

Western Michigan 73 Ball State 58.

Fort Wayne 82 Omaha 78.

Sam Houston State 81 Houston Baptist 68.

Other games of interest:

#1 Nova 78 St. John's 71

#5 Purdue 81 Minnesota 47. Some people had Minnesota as a dark horse Final Four team in the preseason predictions.

#5 Wichita State 72 Tulsa 69

#7 Duke 89 Wake Forest 71. Coach K missed the game with an illness.

#9 Oklahoma 102 #16 TCU 97 in overtime.

#13 Seton Hall 74 Georgetown 61

#15 Gonzaga 75 San Francisco 65

Memphis 75 Temple 72. A late three pointer off a broken play gave the Tigers the win.

Duquesne 101 LaSalle 94. Triple overtime winner with Michigan native Eric Williams with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Duquesne looks like it has it's best team in a long time.

Loyola-Chicago 81 Bradley 65. The Ramblers are 14-4, 4-2.

Belmont 75 Eastern Illinois 66.

Northern Illinois 72 Eastern Michigan 66. Eastern a disappointing 1-3 in conference.

Scores from January 14, 2018. Light schedule on a Sunday, but some interesting results.

Games of Interest:
#3 Virginia 68 NC State 51. The Wolfpack's string of upsets comes to an end. Between Virginia, Cincinnati and West Virginia, who does a better job of screwing up the other team's offense?

Houston 65 East Carolina 49. Kelvin Sampson, previously of Oklahoma and Indiana, doing a nice job with the Cougars.

Indiana 66 Northwestern 46. IU 4-2 in the Big Ten.

Ohio State 68 Rutgers 46. The Buckeyes are 6-0 in the Big Fourteen.

Army 64 Navy 62. I've got bragging rights over my Dad for a while.

Boston U 54 Holy Cross 40. Bob Cousy ain't walking through that door.

Missouri State 76 Indiana State 73. Carl Nicks and Alex Gilbert ain't walking through that door. (Larry Bird was too easy.)

Davidson 75 Fordham 45. Davidson a nice 4-1 in the A 10.

UMass 72 St. Joseph's 69.

USC 84 Utah 67. This one was basically over at the half as the Trojans took a 46-22 lead at the break.

Or you could've mentioned the late Robert Traylors uncle Richard Johnson, who played at Indiana State and Detroit Mackenzie.

Scores from January 16, 2018.  Our Titans were in the only HL game scheduled.

IUPUI 81   Detroit 66.   In a season of disappointments, put this loss near the top of the list.  Detroit was riding a two game losing streak and on the road to play the team picked to finish last in the HL.  Incredibly, the IUPUI Jags jumped on the Titans from the start and led by 19 at the half.  Detroit put on a second half run and cut the lead to 5, but were outscored 14 to 4 the rest of the way.  JJ Jr. played well, as did Josh, but they were pretty much the only ones. The normally poor shooting Jags shot 52% overall, 48% from three.  The Titans free throw defense was strong again, however, as the Jags hit just 58% from the line.  The Titans are 6-14, 2-5.   IUPUI is 7-11 and a surprising 4-3 in HL play.

Top Twenty Five:
#3 Purdue 78   Wisconsin 50.  No post season for the Badgers this year.  First time in awhile.
Kansas State 87   #4 Oklahoma 69.   Big win for the Wildcats. Won't hurt the Sooners too bad, though.
#12 Cincinnati 49   UCF 38.  Apparently Cincy heard me wonder who was the best defensive team between them, WVU and Virginia and decided to make their case.
#15 North Carolina 87   # 20 Clemson 79.
South Carolina 76   #18 Kentucky 68.  The Cats are young and taking time to gel.

Titan Opponents:
Toledo 91  Ohio 67.  The Rockets are 12-6, 4-1 in the MAC.  Going to circle the date the Rockets travel to EMU.  Moose, that date is February 20 at 7:00 PM  Open date for the Titans.
Kent State 73  Western Michigan 71.  Detroiter Josh Davis with 16 for the Broncos.  Detroit native Jaylin Walker with 10 for KSU.

Games of Interest:
Memphis 73   UConn 49.  Tubby Smith's team wins it's fourth straight conference game.
Louisville 82   Notre Dame 78.  Denny Crum versus Digger Phelps.
Georgia 61   LSU 60.  Pontiac's Yante Maten with 21 and 12 for UGA.
Miss State 80  Vanderbilt 62.  On the night we lost to IUPUI, I remember #15 Mississippi State traveling to Calihan a few years ago and escaping with a 5 point win that was closer than that.
Eastern Michigan 63  Akron 49.  The Eagles win their second in a row.
Ball State 82  Central Michigan 76.
Buffalo 95  Northern Illinois 67.  Milan's Nick Perkins, who officially visited the Titans as a recruit, had 26 points and 6 rebounds.
Syracuse 59  Pittsburgh 45.  Pittsburgh 0-6 in the ACC.
Texas A&M   71  Ole Miss 69.

UNC beat Clemson in Chapel Hill, as Sam's Scoreboard noted. Incredibly, Clemson has NEVER won in Chapel Hill. EVER! They are now 0-59, and the games date back to 1927. Truly one of the amazing stats in college hoops for yet another year!

That is a crazy statistic. I'd have thought that the 93-94 Clemson team led by Sharone Wright and Devin Gray would have had a shot to get the job done, but alas... they lost by 44. :)

On a side note, that same team did get UNC back on their home floor 77-69.

Cleveland State 70  IUPUI 67.  Detroiter Kenny Carpenter with 23 for the Vikings.
