Personal high note for the scoreboard: My nine year old niece Jaida, who some of you have met at Titan games, is playing basketball and her team won yesterday and today. UD Baller, she's a point guard, too. :-)

1. How could anybody not like DePaul? It's the alma mater of Mark Aguirre... the greatest Piston of all time. :D

2. Congrats to Jaida!

Thanks! And the Aguirre line cracked me up.

Whenever I see Adrian Dantley, he has nothing but kind words for Aguirre. And Thomas, too.

Results from December 17, 2017

Northern Kentucky was the only HL team in action and dropped a road game to a pretty good UMBC team by the score of 76-75. The Norse are 7-4.

Other games of interest:
#5 Arizona State 76, Vanderbilt 64. The Commodores (Not Lionel Richie, Walter King, etc.) are 3-7 this season under Bryce Drew.
#7 North Carolina 78, #20 Tennessee 73. Carolina is 10-1.
#21 Baylor 118, Savannah State 86
Duquesne 74, NC A&T 58. We stole Duquesne's logo, but they are having the better season.
Boston College 84, Central Connecticut 65. BC is having a pretty good season. 9-3 and a win over Duke.
Army 79, Air Force 54. I should have made a bet on this game with a cute woman I know who is an Air Force veteran.
Providence 62, Stony Brook 60. The Friars are 8-3, but something is not quite right with them.
Penn State 72, George Mason 54. Jaire Grayer, son of Flint basketball legend Jeff Grayer, scored 13 points and had nine rebounds for George Mason.
Houston 92, Prairie View A&M 72
St. John's 69, Iona 59
LaSalle 95, Mercer 85

Leader in the clubhouse (well, almost in the clubhouse) for Mid Major Win of the Day for Monday is Fort Wayne, currently leading Indiana by 19 with 3:10 to go.

FW wins 92-72 at Bloomington. No chairs were thrown by Coach Miller. This is very close to losing to Wayne State two years in a row. Wayne is a common theme here. Maybe we should add "Wayne" to the school's name. ;)

Scores from December 18, 2017, including some interesting results.

Three games in the Horizon tonight. One inconsequential win and two blowout losses.
#12 Gonzaga 101, IUPUI 71.
Green Bay 108, Rockford University 64
Idaho State 86, Youngstown State 62

Titan Opponents:
#2 Michigan State 107, Houston Baptist 62. Career high 33 points for Miles Bridges. Double double for Cassius Winston who continues to grow as a player.
Idaho 82, Western Michigan 52. Terrible loss at home for the Broncos. Idaho hit 17 three pointers.
Fort Wayne 92, Indiana 72. Mid Major Win of the Day. Fort Wayne has beaten Indiana two years in a row.

Other games of interest:
#14 Kansas 109, Omaha 64
#15 TCU 91, Texas Southern 72. It was a two point game at the half. TCU has won 16 games in a row dating back to last season.
#18 Arizona 83, South Dakota State 53
#24 Florida State 69, Charleston Southern 58
Creighton 90, UT-Arlington 81
Charlotte 69, East Carolina 50. Charlotte recently fired former NBA All Star Mark Price.
Marquette 79, Northern Illinois 70. Tougher than expected for Marquette.
Northeastern 81, Kent State 69
SMU 86, Boise State 63
Texas 47, Tennessee State 46. Low scoring affair for Texas, but a win is a win.
Grand Canyon 71, Mississippi Valley State 38
Valpo 76, Santa Clara 69

So, let me get this straight:

Out of the two Scrabble Word Summit League Teams from Indiana, we got the wrong one into the Horizon League? How bad can it get? Does that mean UIWFFFEEEFW leapfrogs the Horizon and goes directly to the MVC, or do they spend a transitional year in our league first?

I can guarantee you that Fort Wayne will not be on the IU schedule after this season.

Results from December 19, 2017 It was a rough night for the Horizon.

East Tennessee State 81, Detroit 73. The Titans had a good first half, and led by 5 at the break. Unfortunately, the second half was more typical of the Titan season, and ETSU scored 47 second half points on their way to an eight point win.
#8 Texas A&M 64, Northern Kentucky 58. All in all, a good performance from NKU on the road. It was a six point game at the half, and the Norse played them even in the second.
Illinois State 71, UIC 70. The Flames got 23 points from Marcus Ottey but Dikembe Dixson continued to struggle, shooting 4-16 from the field with five turnovers. Dixson is on the list of most disappointing players in the HL so far this season, joining our own Jaleel Hogan.
Niagara 79, Cleveland State 77. Niagara takes the win in this Great Lakes Match Up.
Missouri State 66, Wright State 50. The Raiders fall to 7-5 with the road loss.

Titan Opponents:
Virginia Tech 66, Presbyterian 55. Hokies are 10-2. That loss to St. Louis is keeping them from being ranked.
Auburn 81, Murray State 77. MSU trailed by six at the half but took the lead briefly in the second half. I'm trying to figure out how Murray State got a home game against Auburn.
St. Louis 74, Campbell 66. SLU gets back to .500 at 6-6. Campbell led by eight at the break.
UCLA 85, South Dakota 82. The 8-3 Bruins, still playing shorthanded, trailed by three at the half.
California 81, Seattle 59. The Red Hawks are now 8-6.

Mid Major Win of the Day: Princeton 103, USC 93. In Los Angeles, Princeton outscored the Trojans 17-7 in overtime. The PAC 12 is perhaps weaker than the Big Ten this season.

Other Games of Interest:
#3 Arizona State 95, Longwood 61.
#9 Xavier 81, Marshall 77. The Musketeers were up twenty at the break and held on at home.
#11 Wichita State 89, Arkansas State 80
#17 Oklahoma 105, Northwestern State 68. Sooner freshman guard Trae Young with an incredible stat line: 29 minutes, 26 points, 22 assists. Told you to remember his name. :-)
Clemson 64, South Carolina 48. The Battle of South Carolina.
Charleston 80, South Carolina State 64. The Scuffle of South Carolina
Duquesne 65, Lamar 64
St. Mary's 69, Dayton 54. Dayton is a surprising 5-6 this season.
San Francisco 52, Radford 41.
Oklahoma State 71, Tulsa 59. The Dust Up of Oklahoma.

Wofford, the 3rd smallest D-1 university by enrollment (about 1700), beats North Carolina 79-75 in the Dean Dome. Wofford's average home attendance this year is about 1600 per game.

It was a great game to watch, well except for me being a UNC alum. I can respect what Wofford did in coming into Chapel Hill and playing fearless. Their guard MacGee was lights out shooting, he pulls from anywhere on the court even with a guy in his face. Carolina was sleep walking the majority of the game, surely thinking it was an exams week game against a team that could out class just by going thru the motions. It's only December and its always good to get punched in the mouth a time or two to toughen you up for conference play and March.

Scores from December 20, 2017. One of those college basketball nights that has a little bit of everything from a big upset to some dominating blowouts.

The HL went 1-1.
Oakland 97, Towson 86. The 7-5 Grizzlies pick up a good win against a Towson team that is now 10-2. Kendrick Nunn had his second consecutive 30 point game. Kid can play.
Utah State 91, Youngstown State 74. The Penguins take a loss on the road and are now 2-10.

Titan Opponents:
Vanderbilt 81, Houston Baptist 48. HBU is now 4-9.
Toledo 83, Jackson State 57

Other games of interest:
#4 Duke 104, Evansville 40. One of those games where Evansville is feeling pretty good about coming in 10-2 and dreaming of an upset, and they run into a buzzsaw.
#10 West Virginia 77, Coppin State 38.
#18 Baylor 80, Southern 60
#23 Seton Hall 89, Wagner 68
#25 Creighton 116, SC Upstate 62.

St. John's 77, St Joseph's 73. The Battle of the Simon Templars.
Houston 70, Providence 59.
Georgetown 75. North Texas 63. This one was close for awhile.
St. Bonaventure 84, Northeastern 65.
Georgia State 71, UMass 63.
Memphis 70, Siena 66. The Tigers win their eighth in a row at home, mostly against modest competition.
Louisville 70, Albany 68. Almost a big upset.
UC-Riverside 70, Valpo 60
Kanas State 68, Washington State 65. No marquee teams or names, but a really good college basketball game. KSU went up by 17, WSU came back and took an eight point lead in the second half before KSU went on a final run to pull it out.
UNLV 95, Miss Valley State 63. The Rebels are 10-2 as Coach Menzies works on the rebuild. Romulus native Kris Clyburn, a former Titan recruit, started for the Rebels and scored 11 points. Freshman Amauri Hardy, a Detroiter, scored 12 off the bench.

As PCT and TTH posted earlier, the Mid Major Win of the Day was scored by Wofford, who beat #5 North Carolina 79-75. The Terriers picked up their second win of the season over an ACC team. They beat Georgia Tech earlier this year.

Scores from December 21, 2017.

Another rough night for the HL. (Think I will just copy that so I can paste it in as needed.)

Northern Illinois 69, UIC 63 . The Flames are extinguished and fall to 4-8 with the road loss.

Bowling Green Hornet 81, Green Lantern Bay 78. The Phoenix fail to rise, and slip under .500.

Cincinnati 81, Cleveland State 62. The Bearcats are playing home games at Northern Kentucky while their arena is being renovated. The Vikings just picked up an extra loss on the Norse's home court. They don't redo the floor for Cincy games, leaving the NKU logo and markings all on the court, which looks funny during the telecast.

Titan Opponents:
Michigan 97, Alabama A&M 47
Fort Wayne 75, Liberty 64

Other Games of Interest:
#2 Michigan State 102, Long Beach State 60. Eleventh win in a row for the Spartans.
#8 Texas A&M 89, Buffalo 73.
#14 Kansas 75, Stanford 54. Jayhawks maybe hitting their stride?
#16 Purdue 97, Tennessee State 48. The Boilermakers look like the top challengers to Michigan State in the Big Ten.
#18 Arizona 73, UConn 58.
#24 Florida State 98, Southern Miss 45.

Notre Dame 86, Southeast Louisiana 50
Butler 107, Western Illinois 46
DePaul 83, Miami-OH 66
Marquette 92, American 51
Harvard 74, Boston U 63
Indiana 87, Tennessee Tech 59
Minnesota 77, Oral Roberts 63
Grand Canyon 86, Longwood 56

Mid Major Win of the Day: #12 Gonzaga 70, San Diego State 72. Surprising win because SD State had struggled at times this season.
Honorable Mention for Mid Major Win of the Day: Kent State 79, Oregon State 78. The MAC beats the PAC. Somehow, Kent State got a home game against OSU and got a nice win. Jaylin Walker of Romulus High School led the winners with 25 points. Also, Portland State 106, California 81. I almost picked this one because the margin was so great.

What are the odds we can add a game against Alabama A&M? I'd like to see us duke it out on a neutral court.

Wright State beats Georgia Tech 85-81. Wofford beat Georgia Tech. Does this mean that Wright State is better than UNC - Chapel Hill?

Today, there is a huge game for the HL. And, it's not the Green Bay Phoenix vs the Wisconsin Badgers.

Today, the UIC Flames will battle the Trinity Christian Trolls.

Yes, Flames vs. Trolls at 4 pm. This will be the first NCAA game ever played on a message board. Flames are favored by 28 snarks.

Scores from December 22, 2017. The HL made some positive noise.
Murray State 81, Detroit 82. Titans drop their seventh in a row and go winless in five straight games in Detroit. On the plus side, JJ Jr. had probably his best game of the year and T Jones returned to action.

Wright State 85, Georgia Tech 81. Easily the Horizon win of the night, as the Raiders won in Atlanta after overcoming a nine point deficit. Grant Benzinger scored 22 points for the winners, but also keep your eye on Wright State freshman Loudon Love. He's 6-9, 275, and he put up 16 and 12 while outplaying a pretty good center for GA Tech. Impressive win, but not the mid major win of the day as Georgia Tech has already fallen to Grambling and Wofford this season.

IUPUI 87, IU Kokomo 76. Battle between current and future HL members? ;-)

Oakland 86, Eastern Michigan 81. Oakland takes the back half of the in-season home and home. EMU trailed by 18 in the second half before their furious comeback fell short. Jalen Hayes scored 37 for the Grizz, while Kendrick Nunn cooled down to 20 points after surpassing 30 in the previous two games.

Western Michigan 66, Milwaukee 63. WMU is a good team, but I'm sure this loss stings for the Panthers.

Titan Opponents:
Louisiana Tech 85, Fort Wayne 76
St. Louis 78, Southeast Missouri State 48. The "good" Billikens showed up.
East Tennessee State 79, Georgia Southern 59

Other Games Of Interest:
#1 Villanova 95, Hofstra 71
#3 Arizona State 104, Pacific 65
#6 Miami 75, Hawaii 57
#9 Xavier 77, Northern Iowa 67
#11 Wichita State 75, Florida Gulf Coast 65
#13 Virginia 82, Hampton 48
#15 TCU 86, William and Mary 75. TCU has won 17 in a row.
#17 Oklahoma 104, Northwestern 78. Trae Young had 31 and 12 and continues to lead the nation in scoring and assists. Some preseason predictors had Northwestern ranked in the top 25, but those predictions seem way off now. The Big Ten is weak this year.
#21 Texas Tech 74, Abilene Christian 47. The Big 12/10 is strong again.
Texas 66, Alabama 50. Nice road win for Shaka Smart.
Georgia 84, Temple 66. Pontiac's Yante Maten put up 30 and 12.
Clemson 89, Louisiana 70. Clemson is 11-1.
Providence 89, Sacred Heart 75.
Pittsburgh 63, Towson 59. Towson fell short in their upset bid.
Central Michigan 70, SIU-Edwardsville 52. The Chips are 10-2
USC 84, Akron 53. Weird game. Akron was up 33-29 at the half.
UNLV 94. Northern Colorado 91.

Mid Major Win of the Day: St. Bonaventure 60, Syracuse 57. The Bonnies get the big win on the road and now stand at 10-2.
Honorable Mention: Stony Creek 75, Rutgers 73. Rutgers was feeling pretty good after some notable victories, and probably relaxed when hosting 5-8 Stony Brook. Life comes at you fast. Also, Rider 71, Penn State 70. Rider won on a shot at the buzzer. Rough night for the Scarlet Knights and Nittany Lions of the Big Ten/Fourteen.
