Siena Heights Smashing Win Preview and Game Thread

Siena Heights

When: Saturday, November 25, 2:00 p.m.
Where: Calihan Hall
TV: ESPN 3
Radio: 910 AM Superstation

I'm not taking any chances: Until the Titans lose again, every thread is the "loss preview." Even Siena Heights.

Of course, on paper the Saints shouldn't be much of a threat. The NAIA school enters the game at 2-3 officially, but that doesn't include losses by 60 to Central Michigan and by 31 to Western Michigan. Siena counts both those as exhibitions, though the NCAA schools count them as official games. Go figure. Anyway, we know that little schools can cause big problems for the unwary. The Titans have lost 3 straight exhibitions to D-II schools, and while D-II is clearly above NAIA ball in quality, it's reminds us to overlook no one. D-II Chaminade beat California this week. Youngstown State trailed D-IIII Westminster by 8 in the second half, before gutting out a single digit win. Heck, our last NAIA opponent, UM-Dearborn, hung with us to halftime, and last year we were tied with D-III Adrian at halftime.

Besides the losses to our MAC brethren, Siena Heights has lost in overtime to Cornerstone, the #1 ranked school in NAIA, to unbeaten Indiana Tech (by 3) and to once-beaten Spring Arbor (which lost to the NAIA's #3 ranked team), both of which will enter the NAIA rankings next week (they were both just outside the top 25 in the last poll). So while they can't match the Titans on raw talent, they've played some MAC teams and some of the very best NAIA teams. The talent level the Titans bring won't be far beyond anything they've seen.

As you'd expect, the Titans will have a big size advantage. The Saints do, however, have several players in the 6-5 to 6-7 range. Those include a pair of starters, Senior Trevor Holston and sophomore Keith Jordan. But like most small college teams, they are a guard heavy team. The leading scorers are a pair of guards, senior Tony Jackson and junior Nick Randle. Both, by the way, are very good foul shooters--over 85%--so if our guards are sloppy on defense, that might be a way for Siena Heights to stay in the game.

Siena was unable to keep up with either Central or Western, losing touch with their D-I opposition within a few minutes of the opening tip. They lack the three point shooting that sometimes makes small schools especially dangerous, and they turned it over 29 times against Central and 19 times against Western. But Jordan had a nice game against Western, with 15 points on 5-7 shooting (including 3-4 from three), and so did guards P.J. Austin (11 points, 3-7 from three) and John Hovermale (12 points, 4-8 from three). In fact, though their season percentage against NAIA teams is below 30% when behind the arc, they hit 40% of their three-point attempts against Western, so they can get hot.

As long as they don't have a complete emotional letdown after the last second win over St. Louis, the Titans should win this game handily. The big question may be: Will Bacari Alexander be back on the bench? After that, we'll hope to see continued signs of return to form by Jaleel Hogan, continued work on moving the ball to get better shots (the danger against a team like Siena Heights is that players sometimes find that sheer size and athleticism negate the need for better shot selection), and some PT for the deep bench players, e.g. Eichler, Long, the walk-ons.

Just don't overlook the Saints, and we'll be fine.

Probable Siena Heights Starters (stats for NAIA games only):
PG: Nick Randle, 5-10 RS Jr. (11.6 ppg, 3.6 apg, 40% 3PtFG)
G: Tony Jackson, 6-4 Sr. (12.8 ppg)
G: P.J. Austin, 6-0 Soph. (6.2 ppg)
F: Trevor Holston, 6-6 Sr. (8.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg)
F: Keith Jordon, 6-7 Soph. (8.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg)

Key Reserves:
G: Jon Hovermale, 6-1 Soph. (5.6 ppg)
G: Kevin Smith, 5-11 Soph. (3.0 ppg)
G: Hadi Akle, 6-1 Fr., (3.2 ppg)
G/F: Josh Wisnicki, 6-6 Jr. (7.2 ppg)

Has the 3rd assistant been on the bench recently? Chatman is the only assistant coach on the bench today.

Is Prince available for this game? His playing time has certainly dwindled the past couple of games.

If we would have played this aggressive against Wayne State we would have won and avoided the embarrassment.

Got the thread title updated.

Look, it's Siena Heights. But it's still nice to see the Titans come out with authority against inferior talent. Haven't seen that since Coach Ray prowled the sidelines. And you gotta love 36 assists.
