I'm done with the "coming in" stats because A) the season is almost over and I don't care to look them up and B) it's pretty much a forgone conclusion that we allow every team to exceed their YTD totals when they play us. If there is one completely obvious trend over the 10 games we've played since this thread went up... that would be it.

Since the thread began, the team has managed to achieve 1 goal in 30 attempts. Yeah... I know... Tariiq and Jaleel aren't playing. I'm sure if they were out there our defense would be fantastic.

Knocked down another goal tonight! Now 2-33.

Game 11 : Youngstown State (Road)

vs. Detroit Mercy

FG% - 50%
3FG% - 26.3%
Points - 84
Turnovers - 15

Defense remains our achilles heel. Not kidding. If we actually played some, we could have 15 wins (right now) with this team.

Game 12 : UIC (Road)

vs. Detroit Mercy

FG% - 55.4%
3FG% - 52.2%
Points - 94
Turnovers - 15

Looks like we allowed the UIC team to shoot just a tick better than LeBron James from the field... and much better than Steph Curry from deep. Things aren't looking up on the defensive side of the ball.

But when BA signed, he said our nickname would be FloorburnU.

That he did, Tacitus. That he did. Two years later and the opposition still looks like they were selected to participate in one of the halftime shooting events. I don't get it.

Ok, so we now know that the Titans cannot achieve BA’s defensive goals. Now we must ask the tough question of why can’t they hit BA’s defensive goals?

Options:
1. The coaching staff can’t coach. (Definitely an option)
2. The players have zero ability to play defense. (I bet most can play adequate defense)
3. The players don’t believe in the coaching leadership and choose not to listen to them. (very likely)
4. The opponents are better, and have better coaching. (Definitely better coaching)
5. The coaches are just setting everyone up for a huge NCAA tournament run in 2019. (Someone is listening to BA and his tweets).

Answer to the problem: Drain the swamp!

Postseason Game 1. This is when it really counts.

vs. Green Bay

FG% - 51.8%
3FG% - 56.5%
Points - 93
Turnovers - 14

So, in the end, either we are one of the un-luckiest teams in the history of college basketball OR we suck at playing defense. Based on the stats, I'm going with the "We suck" option.

I stand by my opinion that if you can't put a defensive system in place in 2 full years, then you don't know what you're doing. Time for BA and staff to head on down the road. His performance should probably afford him an assistant coaching job at Olivet. He will surely make an NAIA "Best Dressed" list.

Final 2017/18 Defensive Stats for Detroit Mercy:

Opponent FG% - 48.2% (334th in the country). Conference opponents shot 48.7% against us.
Opponent 3FG% - 39.7% (344th in the country). Conference opponents shot 40.9% against us.
Opponent Points/Game - 85.7 (347th in the country). Conference opponents were held to only 82.3 points/game. Still worst in the conference, but proof that BA really had these guys focused during the second half of the season.

I think if given the opportunity over the next 3 or 4 years BA and staff could potentially get us to a place where we rank in the low 300's or high 290's in defensive performance. I have a sick feeling in my stomach that tells me we'll get the chance to find out.

Somehow, one of the worst 3FG%'s and Opponent Points/Game of 2016-17 got worse in 2017-18. Let's examine how. Since the highest percentage of 3 pointers is taken by guards, it stands to reason that opposing guards can take a higher percentage of the blame for 3 pointers allowed. Compared to last year, what newcomer added in the most minutes played at guard? Additionally, I think we can all agree that defense is proportional to effort. Again, logic dictates that someone hustling will get more personal fouls called on them. There is a newcomer who had very very few fouls called on him, almost none in the last few games, and the person he replaced, who is known to hustle on defense, had quite a bit more. This is subjective analysis, but I will take the hustler every time vs the matador. The one key data point we are missing is +/-, which is probably hard to do on a small budget. I am confident that some UD guards would have a very poor +/-. Combine that with a 3 point percentage below 30% and one wonders how bad it will be next year with the same effort and same coaching. Those not willing to pass, pass, pass and play solid D should not be playing. The day we flip-flop with The Citadel, we should go to Division 3.

Let this be the dagger that ends this topic:

The Titans give up 85.5 points a game, which ranks 347th out of 351 Division I teams.

So you're saying next year could be worse?

I think it’s safe to say the Titans will be MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH WORSE!

One “Much” for the 4 best defenders who are graduating this year. Does anyone think that the returning players will be any better defensively next year compared to this year? No way in hell!

The college coaching firing list has started. Hopefully BA and Vowels hit the wires in March. It’s our only hope for next year.

Yes, but how do you feel about JJJ? Don't you think he'll pull us through?

Do you think he will pull us through? Do you think his defense will be different and improve the trajectory of the Titans next year? Do you think his 29% 3 point shooting will get to a 40% respectable level? Do you think he will improve his assist numbers to become a real point guard?
