IUPUI Jags Preview and Game Thread

Postby Motor City Sam » Mon Jan 15, 2018 9:45 pm

Currently riding a two game winning steak, the Titans hit the road to take on the IUPUI Jaguars in The Circle City Tuesday night. The game will take place at the Indiana Farmer's Coliseum, on the grounds of the Indiana State Fair.

I have a soft spot for the City of Indianapolis, having lived there for a while and visited often, but I never attended an IUPUI game. (I did attend some Butler games at Hinkle, including an exciting Titan win back in the early 90s.) The Jags don't have much of a profile on the Indy sports scene, getting lost amid the coverage of the Pacers, Colts, Hoosiers, Bulldogs, etc., but the program has recently taken some steps to raise their standing, including the move to the Coliseum in 2014. The Jags are a relatively new program, beginning as a D3 program in the early 70s and moving to D1 in 1998. The Golden Years of Jags basketball came under head coach Ron Hunter (currently the head coach at Georgia State where Ray Mac is associate head coach), who sat in the big chair for 13 years and won 55% of his games before going to Georgia State. The Jags have appeared in one NCAA tournament and one CBI. The Jags haven't had a winning season since Hunter left after the 2010-11 season.

IUPUI currently stands at 6-11 overall, 3-3 in conference. Like other HL teams, the Jags took a beating in the non-conference season and took an upswing when they hit the weaker competition of this year's HL. They're also on a two game winning streak, after two close home victories (just like the Titans).

Probable Starters:

Aaron Brennan: 6-6, 225 senior forward. 12 points, 4 rebounds per game. Has upped his scoring in league play.

Evan Hall: 6-7, 200 junior forward. 8 points, 5 rebounds. He's the guy to foul if it comes to that. He shoots 32 percent from the line.

Nick Rogers: 6-1 sophomore guard. Not a good shooter from the floor, the free throw line or from three. 5 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists.

Ron Patterson: 6-2 senior guard. 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists. Played two years at Syracuse before transferring to IUPUI.

DJ McCall: 6-6 junior guard. 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists. 10-21 from three the past five games, but only a 46% free throw shooter on the season.

Key Reserves:

TJ Henderson: 6-0 junior guard. 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists. Capable of hitting the open three.

Maurice Kirby: 6-9, 240 senior center. 5 points, 4 rebounds, in 16 minutes per game.

Jaylen Minnett: 6-1 freshman guard. Promising young player. 7 points per game, 40% from three and 83% from the free throw line.

Elyjah Goss: 6-7, 190 freshman forward. 4 points, 4 rebounds.

On paper, just looking at the rosters, you would make the Titans the favorites in this game. IUPUI really has no explosive scorers and while they have a few guys who are good free throw shooters, they also have several weak free throw shooters. Like Youngstown State, they are a team that doesn't do anything particularly well. This is an opportunity for the Titans to win three games in a row. However, the Jags have won three conference games, beating Green Bay twice and Milwaukee once, and they're playing at home. Expect a close game, perhaps with the free throw line once again playing a factor.

Go Titans.

Excellent information, Sam. I did not know that you'd lived in Indianapolis. Kind of an underrated city, if you ask me. Also, some of those FT%s are breathtakingly bad. They make Jaleel look like Ernie DeGregorio...or JJ jr.

The Titans are getting 4 points and the over/under is 158. Take the over. And take the points. 3 in a row!!! The Official Moose Prediction (from the home office on the shores of Mooselookmeguntic Lake, Maine): Detroit-Mercy Titans 84 Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis Jaguars 76. GO TITANS!!!

Both teams extremely sloppy so far with whistles and turnovers aplenty. It's shocking how low the level of play is at the lower levels of the Horizon League this season

Being down to 6-11 IUPUI by 19 at half time has to be a low point

IUPUI looking like a real juggernaut so far. Which league do you think they'll head to next? ACC? PAC12?

Been a fan for 44 years, that was the worst 20 minutes of basketball I’ve ever seen the Titans play.

At this pace, we'll have a chance at becoming Francis’ Flop, the worst Catholic team in America, in the Pope's Poll :o

IUPUI's coach must have a better grasp of The Secret than Bacari.

That's a positive thing to say.

You know, I was thinking just that. The quality of play is absolutely dreadful for D-1 NCAA basketball. How do you find any hope when a game against an dyslexic alphabet college with a 6-11 record goes this bad?

Moose, you don't. Our program is at Code Red dumpster fire disaster level right now. I think, what we've learned tonight, is that barring a miracle HL tourney win, Vowels is gone. And possibly BA as well depending on the contract.
