Remember the 1997-98 Titans

Postby Rogobob77 » Wed Jan 17, 2018 11:36 pm

The 1997-98 basketball Titans will be reunited this weekend. That team went 25-6, including a first round NCAA tournament win over St. John’s. At the luncheon today BA said he expected 90%-95% of the guys to be attend the 20th reunion festivities. Sounded like there will be a private dinner on Friday, and a recognition ceremony at halftime of the Oakland game. To rekindle some memories, here’s the roster:

Players

Bacari Alexander
Brian Alexander
Matt Bauman
Walter Craft
Desmond Ferguson
EJ Haralson
Derrick Hayes
Jermaine Jackson
Michael Jordan
Rashad Phillips
Perry Robinson

Coaches

Perry Watson
David Greer
Mickey Barrett
Michael Jackson

Damn, too bad I'm too young to have experienced that. I would have thought that with Michael Jordan we would have at least made the Elite 8. Pretty cool that we had Michael Jackson as a coach and he got to spend time with his brother, too.

That Titan team averaged 74.6 ppg on offense, gave up 63.1 ppg on defense. UDM won the regular season MCC crown, but lost to Green Bay in the league tournament. Road wins over Michigan State and Iowa State were key in getting the at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Average home attendance was 3,328, best Calihan crowd was 6,851 versus UIC. Hayes led the team in scoring (13.7 ppg); Jackson, Brian Alexander, and Phillips also averaged in double figures.

My sophomore year. Great memories. I think you mean Brian Alexander, Rogo.

Shame they couldn't of added a fan related event/dinner that could of been a good fundraiser.

Thanks, I corrected my post. Bacari averaged 4.2 ppg that year as a junior.

That was a fun season, I attended every home game that year. It seemed like we averaged more than 3k that season. I miss those days.

I was there as well... though 3-4000 fans seems about right to me. I basically recall walking in and sitting (generally) right where I sit at games today without any issue. Maybe there were a few dozen more heads immediately in front of me than there are currently. :)

The game against UIC was the conference clinching game... basically... which is why the attendance swelled. UIC was tough that season. I recall Rashad putting on a dribbling display as the game drew to a close. I recall my best friend (attending OU at the time) looking at me and saying "how is he even dribbling the ball like that?... what is that?". It was funny to hear coming from a former All-State high school player.

I had another obligation this afternoon and didn’t make it to Calihan until early in the second half. I missed the halftime reunion festivities, perhaps someone else can comment. Had a nice chat with Rashad Phillips immediately following the game. Several guys from the 1998 team came up to the Titan Club room after the contest. Perry Robinson was great to talk to, he’s in sales (medical equipment), living in the Atlanta area. He said the team is still very close knit and he keeps in touch with most of his old teammates.
