Interesting tweet from Terry Foster of 97.1: “Ferris State basketball coach Andy Brokema was not offered the UDM coaching job. It came down to Mike Davis and Stan Heath. Davis accepted the job.”

"We control our ability. There's nothing in your DNA that says you can't be a champion. It's all in the work you're willing to do. I'm excited to be here, and we will really work hard."

I guess this puts the rumor about McFolley in the fake news category.

https://www.freep.com/story/sports/2018/06/14/mike-davis-detroit-mercy-titans-basketball/702056002/

One player, senior Josh McFolley, will play for his third head coach at UDM and said he was excited about what he heard.

“It’s like high school all over again," said McFolley. “I’m very excited and interested. I’ve heard a lot about Mike Davis over the past few weeks. I’m excited to have a coach like him, who is experienced, coached under Bob Knight, took a Texas Southern team to the tournament the past five years. I’m very excited and ready to get to work."

Brokema didn't check many boxes for us and was never a serious candidate.

Very illuminating interviews with Davis, Vowels, and Cureton on Fox2-Detroit. Takes a little over 10 minutes.

Detroit Free Press has another story this afternoon on the Davis hire, this one focusing on remarks from Dan Dakich. Also mentions that JJj has asked for a release from the Titan program:

What a humble sincere guy. The more I watch and listen to Davis the more I like him. I am a huge fan of if someone doesn't want to be here good luck to them but I have to think Davis would have made Allen a better player and although he went to play for a really nice guy I am already convinced that Davis is the better of the two as far as coaching and being a good person. How refreshing Davis is after all the canned trash we have had thrown our way the last couple of years.

For me this is a great hire. When I think of all the assistant coaches UDM hired, including three from UM., I probably missed someone. but in my time Willie McCarter, Don Sicko, Ricky Birdsong and Bacari Alexander could not get the job done and left or were fired. Perry Watson is the notable exception. Davis can recruit and sell Conference Championships and NCAA appearances most Horizon League coaches do not have the extent of his resume. We finally got it right!

I agree. When Ricky left, he left the program in much better shape than when he started. When he was hired, things were just as bad as the past 2 seasons. He laid a good foundation upon which Perry Watson could build his great teams of the late 1990's and early 2000's.

What concerns me the most about Davis is his lack of experience in international recruiting, specifically in Northwest Eroupe?

Damon Harge, an incoming freshman at TSU, and maybe the top incoming recruit of Davis this season (along with his son), has received his release
