Remember the Titans: BobCalihan@100

Postby Rogobob77 » Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:31 am

The centennial of Bob Calihan’s birth will be August 2, 2018. I briefly chatted with some representatives of the Athletic Department about this a few months ago, and is my understanding that some kind of announcement relating to the milestone will be made by Detroit Mercy during the summer. Perhaps a “BobCalihan@100” commemoration can take place at one of the November or December home MBB games scheduled for this calendar year.

Calihan’s bio from Wikipedia:

Calihan played for the University of Detroit from 1937 to 1940. He led his team in scoring during each of his three seasons and became the school's first All-American honoree in 1939. After graduating in 1940, he played professionally in the National Basketball League for the Detroit Eagles, Chicago American Gears, Syracuse Nationals and other teams. He became Detroit's basketball coach in 1948, and remained in that position until 1969. Over his coaching career, he posted a 360–237 record, leading his team to three NIT berths and an appearance in the 1962 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. Detroit Mercy's Calihan Hall was named in his honor in 1977.

Calihan passed away on September 22, 1989.

FWIW, I noticed on a meme advertising Tuesday’s game versus BGSU/Hampton that there is something planned “Honoring Titan Legend Bob Calihan.”

I’m 58 and remember Bob Calihan. My dad was very close with him, and if my father was alive he would be 92. Unfortunately, as great a Titan as he was, too few people who are still around remember him.

It was an honor to meet and interact with Coach Calihan both as a student and an alumnus. I wish that FloHoops had shown the ceremony at center court during the timeout.

Today's cameraman was poor. Several times, the camera was focused on the wrong half of the court. And mostly at the BG bench during any stoppage in play.

Bob Calihan’s daughter and grandson were recognized during the brief mid-court ceremony.
