JJJ gone

Postby 77-85Titan » Fri Jun 15, 2018 3:18 pm

Former Detroit Mercy assistant coach Jermaine Jackson told the Free Press his son, Titans freshman guard Jermaine Jackson Jr., has asked for and received his release from the program. Jackson Jr. made the Horizon League All-Freshman Team last season, scoring 10.5 points with a team-best 2.7 assists in 30 games (24 starts).

It is important to note that just because he was released does not mean he is gone.

I'm sad to see any of our current players want to explore leaving. However, I'm over the past and looking forward to a better future with Coach Davis and a group of players who embrace his methods. And if JJJ explores his options and decides to stay; I'm also fine with that decision.

This now leaves us with 5 returning scholarship players: 1) McFolley; 2) Blackshear; 3) Long; 4) Ballantyne; and, 5) Eichler.

It'd be unfortunate if JJJ left. I think he could be a good Titan when its all said and done.

I hope ultimately if he leaves its for 'the right reasons' and not merely to take his ball and go home because of JJ Sr not staying on staff. Also, having to sit out a year plus not having a barn burner of a frosh year I'm not sure where his stock would be at the moment -- certainly not much raised from when he came out of high school.

I agree, JJJ has the potential to be excellent basketball player at the D1 level. That being said; I believe Mike Davis has the ability to land one or possibly two quality Point Guards (e.g. graduate transfer and/or Antoine Davis) for the upcoming season.

Watch Kampe sign JJJ just to mess with us.

Depends if our release is unrestricted and if the HL transfer rules would permit it.

If JJJr. decides to leave it will be interesting to see where he ends up. He had some decent offers. I'll have too look at the rosters to see where playing time will be available for him in 2019-2020. I remember him taking official visits to Toledo and Colorado.

No official news on JJJ and JB. Other reputable posters on the other board suggesting they will be attending a JUCO but not playing ball, hoping to get 3 year scholarship offers and get back in the game. Seems like this whole thing really blew up in their faces. Now, instead of playing D1 basketball at a well regarded private university for free, they’re paying money to attend a community college and play pick up games at a prep academy. Honestly, I hope somehow it all works out for them. Not looking promising right now.

LIU Brooklyn have landed another transfer in 5'10" PG Jermaine Jackson Jr., per LIU Brooklyn coaching staff. Played as a freshman @ Detroit Mercy in '17-'18 & avg'd 10.5 ppg, 2.7 apg in 30 gms (24 starts). Didn't play in '18-'19. Immediately eligible & has 3 yrs of eligibility.

Not surprised at all. Honestly, I hope both JJJ and JB do well there.

For all of you who like discussing rebranding, I believe LIU Brooklyn will no longer exist by the fall. LIU previously fielded two separate athletics departments (Brooklyn as D1 and Post as D2) but is merging all their athletics over the summer. The team will be known simply as LIU.

Which is what their teams were called historically until some marketing moron got ahold of them a decade or so ago. In short, they've found a way back to their historic, simpler name, which has a considerable basketball history. Good for them. An inspiration to the rest of us.

I seem to recall a highly rated college QB from CW Post.

I expect there are quite a few CW Post alumni who are upset at losing the distinction of their historical identity to a consolidated name.

Addendum: The LIU-Post/LIU-Brooklyn stuff dates from 2012. Before that they were just Long Island University, often abbreviated as LIU, and plain old CW Post.

Under the legendary Clair Bee (and for 2 years during WWII George Wolf), LIU was 386-88 from 1932-1951, winning the NIT in 1939 and 1941 and being named the national champions in 1939. They were ranked 3rd in the country in 1950 and 2nd in 1951. But they then killed off their program for 20 years after several of their players (including Sporting News Player of the Year Sherman White) were caught up in the point shaving scandal of 1950 (the team actually would have been ranked even higher but it lost a couple games it shouldn't have, when the players, trying to win by a few points, accidentally lost two of the games they fixed due to their attempts to keep the games close).

Anyway, if they can get back to being just plain old Long Island, we can get back to being plain old Detroit.
