Wright State
When Thursday, January 3, 7:00 p.m.
Where Calihan Hall
TV: ESPN+
Radio: AM 910 Superstation

Three months ago there weren’t many experts who would have predicted Detroit to be sitting atop the Horizon League after the first week of play, so the Titans have already confounded expectations. Although the Titans’ return home this weekend, the road gets tougher, not easier. Road wins over Youngstown (consensus prediction 9th) and Cleveland (7th) were nice, but now the all-but unanimous pre-season favorites, Wright State and Northern Kentucky, come to town. NKU ranks #1 in the conference in every popular computer formula, and Wright State, which has disappointed, still ranks #2 in the conference in NET and KenPom, and 4th in Sagarin.

Wright State leads off the week-end on Thursday. The Raiders split at home on opening weekend, taking a big early hit in the conference race with a loss to pre-season #3 UIC, but rebounding to take out IUPUI on Sunday. Before that, the Raiders had scored one of the best Horizon non-conference wins, beating Toledo by 10 in mid-November, but their other wins were a motley lot, including two non-D1 foes, and all came at home. They enter Thursday’s game at 7-8 overall, but just 5-8 in D1 play.

Coach Scott Nagy has used a consistent 7-man rotation this year, though he’s juggled the starters a bit. Notably, the team’s leading scorer, forward Billy Wampler, didn’t start the IUPUI game on Sunday, the first time he’s not started all year. It worked out pretty well—he ended up playing 31 minutes and scoring 22 points, so I expect we’ll see that again. Assuming so, the starters will be Cole Gentry and Mark Hughes at guard, Loudon Love, a true post up center, in the middle, 6-11 Parker Ernsthausen at forward, and senior Alan Vest as a third guard. Coming off the bench we’ll see Wampler, freshman Skyelar Potter and, as the 8th man, some spot duty from another freshman, Malachi Smith.

Wright State is near the top of the league in fewest points allowed, but this year that’s been a function of the Raiders’ slow pace, not the tenacious perimeter defense for which they’ve been known in recent years. In fact, Wright State ranks 349th in the country in opponents’ three point percentage, which certainly bodes well for a team as reliant on three point shooting as the Titans. Further, despite some real size in the paint, they are last in the Horizon in blocked shots, and also just 8th in steals. What Wright State still does well is rebound, especially on the defensive boards, so the Titans need to shoot well.

On offense, WSU is a good three point shooting team and will take a lot of threes. Except for Love, who is strictly a low-post player, every man in the rotation is a threat from deep, including the 6-11 Ernsthausen. If the Raiders move the ball well and get open looks, they could score a lot of points on Thursday. The Raiders will likely look to isolate Ernsthausen, a decent three-point shooter, on the opposite side of the zone from King, where he can use his 6-11 height to shoot over Davis, McFolley, or Hamrick. An inside/outside game with Love could also be really effective for Wright State, since Love is a threat to score any time he gets the ball down low and the Titans don’t really have anyone with the size to stop him. If we collapse, he can toss it out to just about any player likely to be on the floor for the three point attempt. Blackshear has to stay out of foul trouble, and the Titans need to prevent the pass in to Love when possible, while keeping pressure on the perimeter where Wright State has plenty of three point shooters. It’s a tough order. Between that and WSU’s weakness in defending the three, it could be raining threes in Calihan on Thursday night.

The conference schedule is very favorable to the Titans, with this being the first of 5 straight home games. The Titans have put themselves in a good position by sweeping in northeast Ohio last weekend, and could come out of this weekend in the Horizon driver’s seat. Even a weekend split would be huge, given expectations for the Titans entering the year. Wright State seems the more winnable game, and we’ll start there. I'll be in New Orleans, but you can be in Calihan Hall to watch the first place Titans.

This mornings Vegas line is Wright State by 5 1/2 with the o/u at 136. N. KY. is favored by 4 over Oakland.

A really minor thing to complain about, but I wish HL would stagger games by 15 minutes or so. It’d be nice to watch the end of the OU/NKU game in real time after our game.

Probably reasonable to assume the Titans coaching staff will go with a rotation similar to the first 2 games of league play; Davis, McFolley, King, Blackshear, Brandon, Curry, and Hamrick.

Tra’Quan Knight and Musial Gjysma are behind the bench and not in uniform for tonight’s game.

Wow what an end to the first half. And what impressed me the most was how the defense tightened up. Pretty impressive. WSU looked tentative. And what can you say about Antoine! Haven’t seen his shot fall this well since that 3 game winning streak! I’ll take it.

I know. I’m worried we’d go somewhere and the WiFi won’t work well. The waiters at the Bdubs in Elkhart will laugh at us when we ask them if they can stream ESPN+ games. We’ll figure something out. I think odds of Titans playing at ND next season are good. Would be nice to organize something.

This looks to be the game where we start taking seriously our chance to win the league title. NKU will be another measuring stick (maybe more accurate as they seem to be the best the HL has this season) but this game on the heels of YSU and CSU on the road is impressive.

Can't get lackadaisical with a decent but not insurmountable lead. Or as Oakland grads say, "laxidaisical."

Uh oh. Come on tighten up Titans. Perhaps better to do this now than at the 5 min mark. Still time to find it.

Not to disagree with Earl, but Blackshear's feet were moving on that blocking foul. A little cheap, maybe, but I can see it. Titans have to focus right now. This looks to be the Raiders' surge and we're getting sloppy.

Just get it out of their system and refocus.
