Yesterday Joe Lunardi switched out NKU for UDM in his bracketology forecast. This is me now waiting for the game to start on a Saturday morning.

Northern Kentucky
When Saturday, January 5, 1:00 p.m.
Where Calihan Hall
TV: ESPN+
Radio: AM 910 Superstation

Having won a pair of road games in Ohio and then dispatched with preseason favorite Wright State, the Titans now take on the top-rated Horizon team so far, Northern Kentucky. What looked like it could be an NKU blitz of the conference came to a sudden halt on Thursday when the Norse lost a 10-point lead and then the game to Oakland. Between that and Thursday’s Antoine Davis Show, I don’t think we’re going to sneak up on Northern on Saturday.

Both teams are in the top 35 in the country in three pointers made, so they’ll be a lot of long range bombs flying through Calihan. But Northern also has the inside threat of All-Conference forward Drew McDonald in the paint. McDonald is also a 39% shooter from behind the arc. Like Wright State, any one of NKU’s top 5 in minutes—that includes guard Jalen Tate off the bench—can chuck it up from deep. Of the starters, only freshman guard Trevon Faulkner is not shooting at least 34% from behind the line. But a similar plethora of three-point shooters and the inside presence of Loudon Love didn’t get Wright State to 60 points, so we’ll have to see if Northern can do better.

Northern is a strong rebounding team and takes care of the ball. In Jalen Tate, they’ve got one of the league’s best defensive guards to put on Davis (although the same could be said of Wright State and Mark Hughes). In the middle, seven-foot sophomore Chris Vogt averages less than 13 minutes per game, but when he’s in there he’s a very good shot blocker and penetration will be tough.

Generally, expect good, fundamental basketball from a team with lots of offensive weapons. And keep an eye out for one-time Titan commit Adrian Nelson. He’s generally the 8th or 9th man in the rotation, and played 11 minutes against Oakland.

Milestones:
- A win Saturday would mark the Titans’ first 4-0 conference start since the 1999 season.
- Antoine Davis needs 41 points to tie John Long’s Titan freshman season record.
- Antoine’s 10 threes on Thursday gave him 78 for the season, pushing him past Greg Grays and Dwayne Kelley and into the #8 spot for most threes in a season. With his next three point basket he’ll tie Jon Goode and Corey Allen for the 7th best single season performance. Also in reach are Desmond Ferguson (82 in 1999, and 83 in 2000) and, with another big night, Anton Wilson (86 in 2016).
- Josh McFolley needs 10 points to pass Jon Goode for 24th place on the Titans’ career scoring list. Eighteen points catches #23, Tony Tolbert (Tolbert did it in 56 games—Saturday will be Josh’s 109th).
- The Titans are already halfway through the regular season entering Saturday's game.

We played competitively in the first half until things started to unravel. Disappointed how quickly this one got away and we couldn’t recover. Our defense was really poor today. Either that or NKU figured something out against our zone that other league teams haven’t . We couldn’t stop anybody down low and they had too many uncontested 3s. I wish it was a close competitive loss but on the other hand Toledo beat us by 50 and we’ve recovered pretty well.

The good news (so far) is that everything we’ve heard about Isiani is true.

We lost the game in the last 3 minutes of the first half and the first 6 minutes of the second half. We have to play all 40 minutes to win against a good team like NKU. We are not good enough to play just 31 minutes. Those 9 consecutive minutes of defensive lapses, turnovers, and other bad play cost us the game.

Hey, this a lot better than last season when you were going over the game logs and trying to find any 6 min stretch when we outscored the opposing team. ;)

True, I’m not disheartened at all after one loss like this. Let’s win 2 next week against The Wisconsins.

Good game for film. And our rematch. Let's keep getting the zone better. And our offense.

We’re going to be ok. These kids can play and we have the right coach. Keep supporting our Titans.
