Green Bay--Battle for First Place

Green Bay

When: Thursday, January 10, 7:00 p.m.
Where: Calihan Hall
Radio: AM 910
TV: ESPN+, WADL-38

The surprising Titans take on Green Bay on Thursday in Calihan, with the winner getting first place. Green Bay was the consensus 4th place pick in the pre-season, and they've started conference play 3-0, albeit by the skins of their chattering teeth: The Phoenix beat Milwaukee in Milwaukee by 10, but at home went to overtime to beat Youngstown State and then beat Cleveland State by 1 on an off-balance bank shot by Sandy Cohen at the buzzer. The Phoenix have played well at times--the hung with Iowa and Oregon most the way before falling to each by 11, and beat Belmont in Green Bay; and not so well--they lost at Bowling Green by 29.

The Phoenix, you'll recall, are run & gun under coach Linc Darner, and this year is no exception. KenPom says they play the 8th fastest game in the country, and accordingly, they lead the league in scoring, and are last in points allowed. They have 10 players who average at least 10 minutes per game, and they'll come at us in waves and try to force the pace. Like many Horizon teams (half of which are in the top 25% nationally) they are a good three-point shooting team.* But though they can shoot the three, it's less important to them than to most Horizon teams--only IUPUI takes a smaller percentage of its shots from outside the arc. They lack a big, low-post player, but they've got a bunch of guys in the 6'5"-6'6" range, guards who drive well, wings who slice to the basket, and, as you'd expect, they score a lot in transition. Also, 6-6, 190 lb. junior Tank Hemphill, though not that classic low-post guy, is very effective in the paint. If the Titans shoot well, they'll be able to get back and set up the zone. If we don't shoot well, and given our rebounding weakness, Green Bay might run us out of the gym. (Fortunately, Green Bay is not a particularly good rebounding team, either). And worth noting: Green Bay's main ball handlers--PJ Pipes, Sandy Cohen, JayQuan McCloud, and Kamron Hankerson--are all shooting 78 percent or more from the foul line. The fast pace means catching up early is possible, but it's tough to catch up late by fouling.

Green Bay leads the all-time series 31-25, which I find kind of embarrassing. They've won 11 of the last 12, including 3 last year. The only Titan win over the Phoenix since 2013 came two seasons ago, 93-92, and featured a game winning, old-fashioned 3-point play by Dre Black with 12 seconds left. It was Black's best game as a Titan, with 15 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds (Jaleel Hogan scored 28 and Josh McFolley 17).

A win over Green Bay will, I think, establish the Titans as a legit contender for a first division finish and maybe more, and put us back in first place with a quarter of the conference schedule behind us. A home loss wouldn't be catastrophic, but it would certainly temper expectations.

Come on Titans! Against head-to-head competition, we’ve done well in comparison. Put the pedal to the metal tonight.
I hope Isiani is back...any word? With concussions isn’t the protocol to sit out for week? Any doctors in the house?

I'm not just being a homer; the Titans are on the rise. This season could get interesting as it goes along.

Is anybody watching tonight? On TV or at Calihan? Message boards are kind of dead right now.

Cole Long and Marquis Moore are rotating better, Green Bay isnt getting that open look on the baseline that NKU got on Saturday.

Good minutes from Cole Long! Foul trouble was a problem with Gerald and Chris.

A double-double for Harrison Curry.

Good recovery by Josh from the NKU game.

And with his 10th point of the game, Antoine Davis sets the new Titan record for most points by a true freshman in a season breaking Ray, Jr's record of 446. He's now 20 points ahead of Ray Jr with 13 games remaining in the regular season.

Very happy for Josh McFolley, what a comeback game after publicly apologizing to fans after the last one. Amazing shooting night and 5 steals.

Fun game tonight. Josh and Antoine were great and were feeding off and supporting each other. Interesting to see Marquis Moore get some minutes, he was very active and effective on defense. There was a decent (by recent standards) student turnout for the Greek Night ‘games’ ... I hope they had enough of a good time to come back. Often.

Best crowd so far this year. I was hoping to run into Moose ,San and Faithfull. Well maybe you guys can get down Sat. I wonder what happened to Kirky. We started losing and Kirby fell off of the map. You guys are missing out it’s a lot of fun watching these kids play. They play hard.

Bernie Smilovitz broadcast our score (no video) and that hasn’t happened in a long time. Mentioned AD’s 29 but not Josh’s. At least it’s a start!

For you stat hounds, I wonder when was the last time two Titans went for 29 or more points in the same game.

Last year I believe JJJr and Corey both had over 30 in a win.
