Game Thursday

Postby Resurget Cineribus » Tue Jan 29, 2019 2:25 pm

With the record cold, school closings and state of emergency, any word on whether Thursday’s game might be postponed? By Saturday we are back to normal but not Thursday. I just made the decision to shut down my operations in Indiana because of the cold and safety concerns.

Game is on.

The temperature line is -1 at tip-off.

Free pizza and soda pop to first 100 students who attend.

On the court, I hope to see a more connected defense on the floor this time. Since the NKU game, some of the players have abandoned consistent zone principles in favor of less cohesive individual play. Tonight, I hope to see that change and a convincing Titan victory inside the frigid confines of Calihan Hall.

Cleveland State

When Thursday, January 31, 7:00 p.m. EST
Where Calihan Hall
TV: ESPN+; WADL
Radio: AM 910 Superstation
Military Appreciation Night

The Titans start the second round of Horizon League play with a couple of must-win home games this weekend, cold permitting. Cleveland State and Youngstown State come to town, and if the Titans can’t win these two, it’s pretty hard to see a first round home game in the Horizon tournament in the Titans’ future.

When we last checked in on Cleveland State in late December, the Vikings were entering Horizon League play with a little momentum, having won 3 of their last 4 non-conference outings. But Oakland and the Titans swept the Vikings in Cleveland, and it’s been a very tough season ever since. Indeed, Cleveland lost its first 8 conference games before beating Youngstown State at the Wolstein Center last Saturday, and they enter this game at 6-16 overall, and just 1-8 in conference. It will take a small miracle for CSU even to qualify for the Horizon League tournament. So having said everything I can to jinx the Titans, let’s be clear: There is no excuse for not winning this game.

The Vikings play fast, and they throw up lots of 3 pointers. In Detroit’s 73-61 win in late December, Cleveland State missed most of those three pointers (6-26, 23%), but like most Horizon teams, they’re actually a pretty good 3 point shooting team (35% on the year), and that makes any team dangerous. They’ve had no major injuries, defections, or lineup changes since December, so they’ll basically be throwing the same team at us we saw before. Here’s the link to that preview: http://udtitanbasketball.freeforums.net/post/12460.

On the Titan side of things, it’s clear that Coach Davis is growing frustrated, and in particular frustrated with his seniors, whom he feels haven’t bought in to the system and aren’t providing leadership. It’s a tough call here. Remember, the Titans have already won more games than most people thought they would. The goal this year has always been to be ready to win three straight games in March. So does Coach pull the plug on his seniors, and hope a revamped lineup with an emphasis on freshmen can be ready to pull that off in a month? And if he does that, who plays the #2 guard? Darrell Riley? Who provides interior defense? Is Harrison Curry suddenly going to start playing 35 minutes a game? Or would we expect Chris Brandon (who, by the way, has played less in each of the last three games than in any of the team’s first 18 games, so maybe Coach isn’t so happy with him either) and little-used Boe Nguidjol to hold the baseline? It will be very interesting to see what Coach does here.

Meanwhile, we’ll certainly have to hope that Antoine Davis is ready to go. We really haven’t seen Davis and Isiani on the court together for any length of time. If Isiani is popping like he was last Saturday, teams will have a terrible time if they try to double team Antoine. Last time against Cleveland State, Davis had just 17 points, his lowest scoring game of the year, and was 1-11 from three. But the Titans won, largely thanks to balanced scoring from the upperclassmen: Seniors King and McFolley each scored 15, Blackshear added 8, and junior Harrison Curry had 10. Junior Lamar Hamrick also had a good game, with 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Besides Davis, the only freshman to see the floor in that game was Brandon, who was a non-factor with 0 points and 2 rebounds in 16 minutes.

Bottom line: Just using stats from Horizon League play, Cleveland State is last in the league (by a large margin) in average scoring margin; last in rebounding margin; last in turnover margin; 7th in field goal percentage (but closer to 10th than the 6th; Detroit is 3rd); 7th in 3 point field goal percentage (Detroit is 2nd). There is no excuse for us not to win this game.

Expected Cleveland State Lineup
PG: #1 Tyree Appleby, 6-1 Soph. (17.3 ppg, 5.2 apg, 3.7 rpg, 35.8% 3PtFG)
G: #2 Kasheem Thomas, 6-0 Jr. (6.8 ppg, 3.0 apg, 3.2 rpg, 40.4% 3PtFG)
SF: #4 Seth Millner, 6-6 Fr. (6.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg)
F: #13 Stefan Kenic, 6-9 Soph. (10.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 35% 3PtFG)
F: #22 Jaalam Hill, 6-7 Jr. (9.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.0 bpg)

Key Reserves
G: #5 Rashad Williams, 6-2 Fr (9.9 ppg, 39.2% 3PtFG)
G: #11 Dontel Highsmith, 6-2 RS Sr. (4.0 ppg)
F: #12 Algevon Eichelberger, 6-8 RS Soph. (5.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg)
F: #35 Deante Johnson, 6-9 Fr. (1.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg)
F: #24 Dibaji Walker, 6-7 RS Fr. (4.1 ppg)

According to Dan Hasty on Twitter

Injury update: Assuming all checks out in pregame warmups, the @detroittitans are optimistic that freshman guard Antoine Davis (knee) will play tonight against the @CSU_Athletics.

A win for the good guys. More wins in 2019 than in either of the past two seasons.

To top it off, the Penguins enjoy the polar vortex cold weather and edge OU 75-74.

according to the CSU message board their leading scorer Tyree Appleby didn't play due to injury; Jaalam Hill (starting F) was suspended and another starter, Kasheem Thomas (G) left game due to hip injury......for us AD played over a knee injury, Curry missed due to injury and Josh gets injured during the game. This gives depth players a chance to state their case to play and shine. Besides Blackshear and King playing well Marquis Moore and Willy Isiani were also important contributors tonight.

It wasn't pretty at times; but we got the win.

Youngstown State will be riding high coming into the game tomorrow after beating Oakland yesterday. YSU was down 8 at the half. Other than its loss at Cleveland State last week, the Penguins had played tough at home against Wright State and Northern Kentucky. If Curry's groin has not healed, then we will need others to step up again. Blackshear has to prove that he can play two good games in a row. Curry helped us beat them in Youngstown. And their top rebounder Bohannon (8.7 RPG) did not play against us in Youngstown due to illness or injury.

YSU appears to have improved a lot since playing us to open the HL season.

YSU is just 3-7 in league, but their 12 point loss to us is their biggest margin of defeat, and that one wasn't decided until we closed out the final 4 minutes with a 12-3 spurt. They killed us on the offensive glass, and that was, as you point out, without Bohannon, who is second in the league in rebounding.

Big win last night, does any one know the status of Josh McFolley? He took a hard fall by the CSU bench and didn't return.
Thought the refs did a good job early keeping the CSU bench in check. The technical foul started to open the game up for the Titans.

The remake of the "March of the Penguins" was great last night on ESPN Plus. Did Oswald Cobblepot make an appearance?

ptc ...… by game time, the polar vortex will be gone. I hope Saturday's warmer weather cools off the Penguins
