Horizon
A day of thrillers in the Horizon, with none more thrilling than the Titans last second win over UIC.
Detroit 70, UIC 69. Who is the last guy the Titans want taking the final shot with the game on the line? You might think it would be Alonde LeGrand, a 38% shooter who is last on the team in points per game and in points per minute of play, but apparently you'd be wrong. The Titans survived a 13 minute stretch, starting with a bit under 2 minutes left in the first half, in which they were outscored 32-6, including 7 minutes without a point and nearly 9 minutes without a field goal, then won it on the unlikely heroics of LeGrand.
IUPUI 89, Oakland 85. Detroit/UIC wasn't the only exciting finish in the HL today. Rashad Williams made a 4 point play to tie this one with 1:04 left in regulation, and neither scored again in regulation, though both teams missed chances to win it, with IUPUI's Jaylen Minnett missing a trey a the buzzer. IUPUI (2-7, 6-16) never trailed in the OT, but didn't clinch it until a Marcus Burke free throw with 4 seconds left. Burk finished with 39 and Minnett with 30. Xavier Hill-Mais led Oakland (2-7, 7-15) with 20.
Youngstown State 98, Green Bay 94. In another overtime game, YSU (5-4, 12-10) edged Green Bay (5-4, 10-12), clinching it on a pair of Darius Quisenberry free throws with 5 seconds remaining. Devin Morgan had his best game in 2 seasons as a Penguin, hitting 6 of 13 from three and finishing with 26 points and 4 assists. Quisenberry added 24. Jaylon McCloud had 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists for Green Bay.
Cleveland State 70, Milwaukee 53. The Vikings (4-5, 8-14) continued to beat expectations, rolling to a 22 point half time lead and coasting home. The Vikings held Milwaukee (5-4, 10-11) to 25% from the floor, shot 51% themselves, and dominated the boards 41-30.
Other Titan Opponents
#2 Gonzaga 92, Pacific 59. No sign of Khalil Chatman.
#5 Florida State 85, Notre Dame 84. Notre Dame (11-8) rallied from 14 down with under 8 minutes to play, but came up short, missing 4 shots on the game's final possession. FSU (17-2) has won 10 straight.
#6 Louisville 80, Clemson 62. Clemson is 10-9.
Georgia Tech 64, North Carolina State 58. NC State (14-6) can't afford to lose games like this if they hope to make the NCAA tournament.
Miami 73, Eastern Michigan 68. Eastern Michigan is 0-7 in the MAC. The Eagles went 10-3 against a very weak non-conference slate (including 4 wins over non-D1 teams). Score one for Coach Davis's scheduling up theory, about which I have expressed doubts.
Akron 88, Ohio U. 86. Loren Jackson had 35 for Akron (16-4), which is tied with Bowling Green atop the MAC East.
Bowling Green 85, Toledo 79. The Rockets drop to 11-9 overall, 3-4 in MAC play. This is the big rivalry game for these two schools.
UC-Irvine 74, Cal-Poly 67. Irvine (12-9) leads the Big West at 4-1 in conference.
Delaware 76, Northeastern 74. Northeastern's Jordan Roland had 27 points, which is pretty good, but Delaware's Nate Darling scored 28 in the second half alone as the Blue Hens (15-7) got the win.
Louisiana 81, Lousiana-Monroe 60. Louisiana-Monroe is still miffed that Louisiana-Lafayette (8-13) claimed the simple "Louisiana" brand.
Tennessee Martin 79, SIU-Edwardsville 75.
Other Games of Note
#21 Illinois 64, Michigan 62. UM (11-8) has lost 4 in a row.
Northern Illinois 58, Western Michigan 52. I wonder if Steve Hawkins is feeling some heat at WMU. The Broncos are 63-84 over the last 5 years, with just winning season.
Central Michigan 71, Ball State 66.
#1 Baylor 72, Florida 61.
#3 Kansas 74, Tennessee 68. Kansas will be short-handed for a while.
#7 Dayton 87, Richmond 79. Dayton (18-2) looks untouchable in the A10.
#9 Villanova 64, Providence 60.
#14 West Virginia 74, Missouri 51.
#15 Kentucky 76, #18 Texas Tech 74 (OT).
#16 Auburn 80, Iowa State 76.
SMU 74, #20 Memphis 70.
Arizona State 66, #22 Arizona 65. The Sun Devils (12-7) trailed by 19 in the first half.
#23 Colorado 76, Washington 62.
#24 Rutgers 75, Nebraska 72.
LSU 69, Texas 67.
Massachusetts 73, Duquesne 64. The Dukes (15-4) have lost two straight and appear ready to fade after a soft non-conference schedule and a favorable early A10 schedule.
Army 73, Navy 66. This ain't football, but it's still a big game.
St. John's 79, DePaul 66. After a very good non-conference season, DePaul (13-7) is now 1-6 in the Big East.
Rhode Island 81, St. Bonaventure 75. Fatts Russell led Rhody with 29. We need more guys with names like Fatts.
Stetson 48, Liberty 43. A week ago, it was thought that once-beaten Liberty (19-3) might not lose again this season in the weak Atlantic Sun Conference, but they've now dropped two straight.
Austin Peay 86, Belmont 78. Peay is 8-0 in the OVC.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Penn 66, Temple 59. Big 5 win for the Quakers ((8-7).
