I am not sure how to attach a picture on here of the announcement, however he is a guard out of Erie Mason, lethal 3 point shooter.

The made 3-pointer from Sparty's helmet was quite impressive. I guess that was behind the new 3-point line.

Second player from in-state to commit to us.

Joey looks pretty good. Long range, drives to the hoop, assists. Anyone know who else was recruiting him?

Hey NC, this depends. If he makes HL ROTY, then Kampe will send out a PR saying that they recruited him.

Toledo was looking at him because he was a local kid, but didn't offer. He's at a Catholic high school, and I believe going to a Catholic college was important to him.

Erie Mason H.S. is not a Catholic H.S. It is a class C school located off of Luan Pier Rd. in Erie Township in Monroe County and is located between I75 and Telegraph about 5 miles north of the Ohio border.

Not much of anyone. Joey is short (5-11); he plays at a small school (D-III, formerly known as Class C) in a rural area that has rarely turned out even a winning season, let alone an NCAA D-1 caliber player; he didn't play on a big name AAU team. All of these things will keep him off most D-I coaches' radar.

He's not a national recruit that we can get excited about in the way one might have for Ray McCallum or Jason Calliste, or even a Class A first team all-stater like Jaleel Hogan. But what he did do was score a ton and lead his teams to wins. And that got him recognition from the All-State teams (1st team Bankhoops/Freep/AP, second team News). He's got tremendous range. Steve Bell at Bankhoops says nice things about him (he compares him to Tom Coverdale, a starter on Davis's Final 4 team at Indiana). He appears to be a very hard worker, a smart kid academically and also with a high basketball IQ. Most of all, Coach likes him and has a history of success with small guards. That all gets me pretty excited, even if he isn't a hotshot "three-star" recruit with a bunch of other D-1 offers before his senior year.

P.S. Good chance he sets the MHSAA record for career three pointers made this year.

It's as well known as Mercy. However I don't think they are as confused as we are and I am sure they do not have the extra $ laying around to throw away. I lived in the Detroit area for about 20 yrs; before I knew there was a Mercy College. I always thought Mercy was a Highschool in Farmington Hills.

More seriously, his older brother played at Monroe St. Mary's, but that's a decade ago.

He attends a public school. His family is a very traditional devout catholic family. His oldest brother did play at St. Mary Catholic Central in Monroe, however, the rest have gone to school at Erie Mason. His next oldest sister is the all time leading scorer in Monroe County and signed with Siena Heights out of High School. She also had offers from public schools, but they put an emphasis on education and faith. Joe was home schooled until High School, so he kind of fits the Mike Davis pedigree.

Liedel’s Erie Mason squad is scheduled to play Harper Woods HS on Saturday, 12/28/2019, as part of the Motor City Round Ball tournament. Not clear where that event will take place, but last year the tournament was at Ferndale High School. Time TBD. (Titans MBB play that day at Oakland, 3:00 pm.)

Erie Mason plays at Detroit Public Safety Academy, a charter school, on 2/4/2020.

Recaps of high school basketball games from around the Monroe County Region for Friday, December 20, 2019.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Erie Mason 56, Ida 37

At the start of every season, every team goes through growing pains.

That’s what Erie Mason did Friday night at Ida as the two sides waged a close battle before the Eagles finally found an edge.

Mason turned its growing pains into growth midway through the third quarter, closing out the period on a 12-1 run en route to a 56-37 victory.

“We were just out of sync (in the first half),” said Mason coach Kevin Skaggs. “Then, we slowed down enough and made some plays, and Joe (Liedel) did what Joe does, creating some plays.

“We’re replacing four starters from last year’s team, and they all want to do so well. We’ll be fine.”

Liedel led all scorers with 39 points, including three 3-pointers 6-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line to spur the team to victory.

The game opened with tough, physical defense on both sides, causing poor shooting, with Ida controlling much of the first quarter and taking a 9-6 lead.

Ida went on a 6-2 run early in the second quarter, fueled by Travis Wegener and Evan Bonk with 3 points apiece, to take a 15-8 lead with 4:58 to go until half.

Mason rallied and took a 21-20 lead into halftime, thanks to a 3-point basket at the buzzer by Liedel.

“The first half was our best half of basketball,” said Ida coach Jared Janssen, adding that the team stepped up after starter Michael Guy suffered a game-ending knee injury early in the second quarter.

The two stayed close until Mason’s 12-1 run over the final 4:15 of the third quarter to pull away.

“Wegener was doing an unbelievable job guarding Liedel, and when he picked up his third and fourth fouls, we had to adjust how we were guarding him and he got loose,” Janssen said.

In the fourth, Mason maintained control of the game, extending their lead and was never challenged.

Dylan Worden chipped in with 8 points for Mason, which improved to 2-0 on the season

Mason plays next on Dec. 28 in the Motor City Roundball Classic against Harper Woods.
