DETROIT (1/7/2020) -- The historic week for honoring past Titan greats will continue in late January as Willie Green's jersey will officially be retired announced the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics.

The ceremony will take place at halftime of the Titans game on Jan. 25 as Detroit Mercy meets UIC in a 1 p.m. tip.

"Willie has been a great Titan and it is an honor to have his jersey hang among the legends in Detroit Mercy history," said Director of Athletics Robert C. Vowels, Jr. "He had a tremendous career here, helping the Titans make some history with a trip to the NIT semifinals, and then had a long playing career in the NBA and is now one of the up and coming coaches in the league and already a part of two NBA championships."

Green was a part of four winning seasons from 1999-2003, including a pair of 20-win campaigns and two postseason appearances. As a sophomore, Green helped Detroit Mercy reach the semifinals of the NIT as the red, white and blue knocked out Bradley, Connecticut and Dayton -- all on the road -- as the Titans made their way to Madison Square Garden. They would end the season by tying a school record with 25 wins and would come back the next season to post 18 wins and qualify for the NIT.

He is still fourth all-time in scoring with 1,779 points, which includes 678 points as a senior, ninth in the Titan record book. As a senior, he was an AP Honorable Mention All-American and the Horizon League Player of the Year after averaging a league-best 22.6 points per game, 12th in school history. During that offensive season, he netted 20 points in 10-straight games.

In his career, he was also tabbed to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team as a freshman and was Second Team All-League as a junior.

He improved in each season as a Titan, averaging 8.4 points as a freshman to 13.2 as a sophomore, 13.7 as a junior and his explosive senior campaign of 22.6. As a senior, he led the team in scoring in 24 of the 30 games with 21, 20-point games, five 30-point contests and a pair of 40-point outings, including a career-best 43 points at UIC, the sixth most in school history.

Green was selected in the second round (41st pick overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics and was later traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He would go on to play seven of his 12 NBA seasons with Philadelphia, averaging a career-high 12.4 points in 2007-08 and 11.3 points in 2006-07.

He also played for the New Orleans Hornets (2010-11), Atlanta Hawks (2011-12) Los Angeles Clippers (2012-14) and the Orlando Magic (2014-15). He finished his NBA career playing in 731 games with 297 starts tallying 8.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists, while shooting 42.5 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from behind the arc and 76.5 percent at the free-throw line. He posted at least 20 points in 37 games with a career-best 37 as a member of the 76ers at Toronto on Apr. 18, 2007, as he finished the game 14-of-25 from the field with five 3-pointers.

Green has now turned his attention to coaching as he is in his first year as an assistant coach with the Phoenix after spending three seasons (2016-19) as an assistant coach for player development with the Golden State Warriors and a summer working with the Los Angeles Clippers NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

In his time with the Warriors, he was part of Golden State's dynasty as the Warriors went 182-64 during the regular season and won a pair of NBA titles in 2017 and 2018, while reaching the finals in 2019.

reggie wanted him as our head coach. maybe it'll happen some day...
In Greek mythology, the Titans were greater even than the gods. They ruled their universe with absolute power! Well that basketball court out there tonight, that's our universe. Let's rule it like Titans! (with apologies to coach boon)
