Streaking Zags maintain top spot in latest Pope’s Poll

Postby The Pope » Tue Feb 04, 2020 4:58 pm

Forty-two Catholic colleges and universities compete in NCAA Division I basketball — here’s a divinely inspired Papal poll showing how they stack up on the hardwood court at this point in the 2019-20 season. Rankings and records reflect games played through February 3.

The Saintly Sixteen:

1. Gonzaga (23-1)
2. Dayton (20-2)
3. Seton Hall (16-5)
4. Villanova (17-4)
5. Creighton (17-5)
6. St. Mary's (19-5)
7. Marquette (16-6)
8. Xavier (14-8)
9. Georgetown (13-9)
10. Notre Dame (13-8)
11. Providence (12-10)
12. San Francisco (16-8)
13. DePaul (13-9)
14. Loyola (IL) (15-8)
15. St. John's (13-10)
16. St. Louis (17-5)

Positioned in Purgatory: Duquesne, St. Bonaventure and Santa Clara.

Hangin’ in Hoops Hell: Boston College, Canisius, Detroit Mercy, Fairfield, Fordham, Iona, Incarnate Word, LaSalle, Loyola (MD), Loyola-Marymount, Manhattan, Mt. St. Mary's, Niagara, Portland, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (PA), St. Francis (NY), St. Joseph's, St. Peter's, San Diego, Seattle and Siena.

"Francis’ Flop" (worst Catholic team in America): Holy Cross (3-20).

Lining up in Limbo (Catholic colleges somewhere in the process of transitioning to D-I): Bellarmine, Merrimack and St. Thomas (MN).

That would be David Robinson, Hall of Fame professional basketball player and former San Antonio Spurs center. He received a Master’s degree from UIW.

Does anyone know the name of the 1966 first-team collegiate All-American football player and former Detroit Lion with a degree (BA, political science) from the University of Detroit?

Realize I’m straying a bit off topic, but another interesting alumnus/school connection: former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir is a graduate of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Did she play basketball there?

Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, also went to UWM.
