Commit/transfer Noah Waterman

The center you wanted. 7 footer (6'11"), rail thin (210#), played a partial year at Niagara before getting injured. The plan was a redshirt. 4 years to play with a waiver.

Patrick Beilein has filled his final scholarship, and the Niagara Purple Eagles have landed one of their most interesting prospect in the last few years.

Noah Waterman, a skilled big man who played at the tiny Finger Lakes Christian School in Seneca Falls, verbally committed to Niagara on Saturday, his brother told GNN Sports. Waterman will be on campus today to enroll.

Listed at 6-foot-10 for his senior season, Waterman, who attended Path Light Academy, may actually be closer to 7-foot, per FLCS coach John Sandlas. He was a 6-2 guard as a sophomore before a massive growth spurt, and those on-ball skills have remained.

Waterman was MVP of the tiny Empire State Christian Athletic League as a senior, and he was dominant in non-league contests as well, averaging 33.9 points, 12.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3.9 blocks. He had 30 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and nine blocks in the ESCAL semifinals, then followed that up with 40 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and six blocks in the championship. He also shot close to 45% on 3-pointers for the season.

Still, Waterman was mostly a non-prospect until recently. Ill-timed injuries kept him off the AAU circuit during his sophomore and junior summers, and the competition in the ESCAL wasn't enough to move the needle.

He picked up offers from Binghamton and Niagara this summer, and drew varying levels of interest from Vanderbilt, St. Bonaventure and George Mason.

Niagara's thin front line took a hit Friday.

Noah Waterman, a 6-foot-11 freshman from a tiny town in the Finger Lakes, put his name in the NCAA's transfer portal, according to recruiting website VerbalCommits.com.

The Savannah native played just seven games for the Purple Eagles, averaging 7.0 points and 3.3 rebounds over 22.1 minutes. He started five times before an ankle injury suffered Dec. 8 against Cornell ended his season.

Under NCAA rules, Waterman should be eligible for a medical redshirt, which will give him four years of eligibility wherever he lands.

Waterman was the final recruit of Patrick Beilein's first incoming class at Niagara. He was a relative unknown, putting up huge numbers for the tiny Finger Lakes Christian School in Seneca Falls. As a senior, he averaged 33.9 points, 12.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3.9 blocks while winning MVP of the Empire State Christian Athletic League.

Waterman was a 6-2 guard as a sophomore in high school before a growth spurt put him on the college radar. His shooting — he hit 42.9% from deep over his seven college games — ball skills and size made him a lottery ticket for Beilein and then Greg Paulus.

Another school will get to see if that ticket hits.

If Waterman does transfer — almost all players who enter the portal do — Niagara will be left looking for more help up front than it already was. The Purple Eagles ranked second-to-last in the country in rebounding margin this season.

So is he sitting a year or eligible in the fall? In the meantime, I would be glad to escort him to Lafayette Coney but for those pesky NCAA rules.

I heard immediately eligible. Niagara had an abrupt coaching change just before the season commenced last year. Perhaps that gave him an out, not sure if that’s the reason.

The YouTube is from high school and lists him at 6-foot-10 and 190 pounds. So add two inches and 20 pounds. He looks like he could use some upper-body strength/weight. A shame that he can't work out with the strength team at Calihan over the summer.
