Pope’s Poll: 1/13/21

Forty-five Catholic colleges and universities compete in NCAA Division I basketball — here’s an encyclical direct from the Vatican showing how they rank after games played thru January 13.

In Hoops Heaven — the Saintly 16

1. Gonzaga (12-0)
2. Villanova (8-1)
3. Creighton (10-2)
4. St. Louis (7-1)
5. Seton Hall (9-5)
6. Xavier (10-2)
7. Loyola (IL) (8-3)
8. St. Bonaventure (5-1)
9. St. Mary’s (9-3)
10. Marquette (7-6)
11. Providence (7-6)
12. Dayton (7-3)
13. San Francisco (8-6)
14. St. John’s (7-6)
15. Santa Clara (7-2)
16. Loyola-Marymount (6-3)

Positioned in Purgatory (at least for right now): Siena.

Hangin' In Hoops Hell: Bellarmine, Boston College, Canisius, DePaul, Detroit Mercy, Duquesne, Fordham, Georgetown, Incarnate Word, Holy Cross, Iona, LaSalle, Loyola (MD), Manhattan, Merrimack, Mt. St. Mary's, Niagara, Notre Dame, Portland, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (NY), St. Francis (PA), St. Joseph's, St. Peter's, San Diego, and Seattle.

"Francis’ Flop" (worst Catholic team in America): Fairfield (2-11).

Lined up in Limbo (Catholic college currently in the process of transitioning to D-I): St. Thomas (MN).

Does anybody remember the last time we were NOT in hoops hell? I never dreamed we would be a full time resident.

A quick search shows that the Titans were in Purgatory as recently as November 2018, referred to by many as the “glory month” of the University’s recent MBB history. The Titans were 5-3 coming out of the gate in Mike Davis’s first season at the helm.
