NCAA Basketball Rule Change

Postby AmenBrother » Fri May 03, 2013 3:12 pm

A rule change passed Thursday by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors means the basketball season can begin two weeks earlier than last season. With the new rule, teams may hold their first practices six weeks before their first allowable game, which is Nov. 8.

If teams start their seasons — not including exhibition games — on that date, the first practices can begin Friday, Sept. 27 this season. Many schools, such as Michigan State, open that first practice with a "Midnight Madness" celebration.

The measure also allows for 30 days of practice within those six weeks, providing off days for teams instead of 30 straight practice days. It also brings the men's basketball schedule closer to the current women's calendar, which has 30 days of practice in the first 40 days before the first games.
