More details on this initiative from the Detroit News:

Should stabilize that campus, good news long term for the University District/Live6 neighborhood.

On a possibly related note, I had heard rumblings several months ago thst suggested Detroit Mercy was exploring the possibility of changing the scope of their teacher education offerings. To be honest, is not one of the University’s stronger programs. If graduate degree educational training subsidized by the Kresge Foundation is going to be the core of Marygrove College’s mission, perhaps UDM will drop their Master’s level programs that would be in direct competition with our neighboring Catholic institution.

Just read about this in the higher ed newsletters this morning. Seems like by far the best Marygrove could have hoped for. I agree it puts UDM graduate Ed programs in trouble, but that’s a small price to pay when you consider how good the new Marygrove could end up proving for the city.

Can’t help but wonder if a merger with Marygrove would have actually been a net benefit after reading all this.

Would probably have required a name change for the institution, an insurmountable hurdle.

Just read that there have been discussions about moving U-M’s School of Education to the Marygrove campus. Now that would really be a game changer for the University District.

And a REAL game changer for the UM School of Education staff.

My guess, a partial but perhaps somewhat significant presence for U-M staff as well as participating students will emerge. In the big picture, think this is a net plus for Detroit Mercy (as opposed to the prospect of having abandoned gothic buildings mere blocks away).

In an unrelated basketball note, I think U-M could make a big splash to connect to the city of Detroit by playing an occasional game at Calihan, not that they really need to.

That would be nice. I’m not holding my breath on that one. UM would call LCA and schedule a game with Duke if they wanted to do something in Detroit.
