Enrollment Updated #s

Postby uofdmik2008 » Sun Oct 19, 2014 5:48 pm

Based on the information given out to faculty, this years enrollment is below 5,000 biggest culprit is the College of Liberal Arts for the decrease, on a positive note College of Engineering and Sciences doubled its freshman class. Hopefully the new scholarships and new marketing focus works for the other colleges, like it has for the College of Engineering and Science and Health Professions. Early applications are nearly double of what they were last year and highest they have ever been, hopefully next year we see a busy campus.

The school is setting a target of raising $75-100 million in this next campaign of which most is supposed to go to the endowment which is around $47 million up from $24.5 million, the 47 does not include large amounts raised over the summer.

Just an interesting tidbit. I was looking at some info from fellow Jesuit School, Marquette University. They have a total enrollment of about 11,000. The interesting tidbit is that 70% of their students are from out-of-state!

Term II Enrollment and Fall 2015 Enrollment Update – As of January 12, Interim Vice President for Enrollment and Student Affairs Debbie Stieffel reports that our freshman application total is 3,837 vs. 2,840 last year, an increase of 35%. The admitted student total is 2,683 compared with 1,606 last year on this date, an increase of 67%. Our current admitted student numbers have already surpassed the previous two enrollment cycles’ final enrollment numbers of admitted students by more than 225. And the academic quality of these students is outstanding. Some of the indicators include: an 80% increase in applications from Catholic high school students.

Fundraising and Comprehensive Campaign Initiatives – Fundraising as of December 31, 2014 was $5.5 million, which is the highest by comparison to each of the last four years.

I heard that the UDM folks are happy with those numbers but the key to success will be getting a good number of transfer students to augment the freshman class and retaining students in the upper classes.

An interesting article in today's Detroit News online edition regarding the closing of an all-women's school, Sweet Briar College, located in Virginia. The problems it faced are what many private colleges and universities like UD are trying to overcome - declining enrollment, tuition increases, rising expenses and endowments. Though this school's particular problems have some notable differences than UD, still there are many similarities that both their school and ours have faced in the past and are facing today. It is a good read. Also the remarks and reactions from Sweet Briar's alums/students should be of interest.

As of Monday, June 22, 515 first-year students had confirmed for fall compared with 466 last year at this time. This is a 10.5% increase. With regard to housing, 253 new freshmen are registered for housing compared with 213 last year. Hopefully this means more students at the Hall:)

Yes, so far good news. Hopefully, a few more straglers make their last minute decision to attend UDM. If they continue this trend, which they are anticipating over the next few years, the Bd of Trustees will consider a new dormitory. Go Titans, Go UDM!
