Big 10 Lacrosse

Postby ExcitedTitan » Wed Dec 04, 2013 10:29 am

The Big 10 is adding lacrosse this year, and they are adding 2 pretty large lacrosse programs with Maryland and Johns Hopkins. I believe the other teams with lacrosse this year will be Michigan, OSU, Rutgers, and Penn St.

It will be interesting to see if, and when, other Big 10 schools add lacrosse. It will be interesting to see what effect it has on lacrosse in the Midwest, which has been growing very rapidly. It will be interesting to see what effect it has on us. We were the only game in the state for a few years.

The Big 10 adding lacrosse was Inside Lacrosse's #1 story of 2013, concluding:

All the practical factors listed above, combined with the prospect that Big Ten Lacrosse could bring more fans to the game than any other recent development, make it the biggest story of 2013.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out for us. I wonder how long before MSU and other Big 10 schools add lacrosse.

Well, that didn't take long. All 6 Big 10 lacrosse teams are in the top 20, with Rutgers #1 and UofM #20:

1 Rutgers 8-0
2 Notre Dame 4-1
3 Penn State 8-0
4 Ohio State 9-0
5 Hofstra 6-0
6 Syracuse 5-1
7 Denver 5-2
8 Army 7-1
9 Albany 4-1
10 Maryland 4-2
11 Duke 7-2
12 Richmond 7-1
13 Princeton 5-2
14 North Carolina 5-3
15 Virginia 5-3
16 Towson 4-2
17 Johns Hopkins 4-3
18 Loyola 4-3
19 Boston University 7-1
20 Michigan 7-1

While the Big 10 is a midwest conference, it has added some East Coast teams with Maryland and Rutgers, and added legendary Johns Hopkins as a lacrosse member. Notre Dame is #2. Is the midwest taking over lacrosse? Not yet since many more players on these teams grew up out East than the midwest, but it should lead to growth around here so maybe someday the midwest will be the hotbed of lacrosse.
