A video captured an Oregon Ducks women’s lacrosse player repeatedly smacking her opponent in the head during the team’s game against Detroit Mercy.
The player, who appears to have No. 5 on her uniform, smacks her opponent three times with the plastic stick. One of the hits threw the player to the ground, while another knocked the stick out of her hand.
Detroit Mercy head coach Laura Maness released a statement published by Deadspin, saying the player’s actions escalated throughout the games, and she opted to release the video when the Oregon player — believed to be defender Jackie Moccia — was only suspended one game.
“We decided it would be best to share the video on social media to bring to light the importance of safe play, and to try to preserve the integrity of the game that we love,” said Maness, who hopes disciplinary action will be taken.
Oregon has issued the following statement:
"During the match on February 21, 2016 against Detroit Mercy, junior Jackie Moccia was removed from the match after an unsportsmanlike conduct incident that was not penalized on the field. She did not return for the remainder of the match. After review of the match video tape earlier this week by the Oregon coaching staff, University of Oregon Head Lacrosse Coach Jen Beck suspended Ms. Moccia for one game. Ms. Moccia is remorseful for her actions and sent an apology on Wednesday to the Detroit Mercy Head Coach and the MPSF.
"The University, Department of Athletics and our lacrosse program have high expectations of our student athletes on and off of the field," Beck said. "After speaking with Jackie, I am confident she understands our expectations and will not display poor unsportsmanlike behavior again."
