The Trolls are being scorched under the bridge by the Flames. They need to Tweet faster and nastier in the 2nd half.

Scores from December 23, 2017.  The Horizon League goes 1-2.

Toledo 77, Cleveland State 52.  At home, CSU trailed by two at the half before Toledo had a big second hand.  The Vikings fall to 3-9.
UIC 84, Trinity 45.  Dikembe Dixson scored 25 to lead the Flames.
Wisconsin 81, Green Bay 60.  If you are going to get Wisconsin, this is the year to do it, but the Phoenix fell behind by twenty at the half and couldn't pull off the road upset.

Titan Opponents:
UCLA 83, #7 Kentucky 75.  The Bruins have struggled being shorthanded after the suspension of the three players following the China trip, but things came together today. Aaron Holiday had 20 points and 8 assists for UCLA.
Seattle 95, Nicholls 89.  Seattle is 9-6 after the home win.

Top Twenty Five:
#5 North Carolina 86, Ohio State 72.  The Heels get back on track after their upset loss to Wofford.
#10 West Virginia 86, Fordham 69.  WVU is 11-1.  Huggins picks up win 830.
#21 Tennessee 79, Wake Forest 60.  Rick Barnes doing a nice job with the Vols.
#23 Seton Hall 74, Manhattan 62.

Other Games of Interest:

Illinois 70, Missouri 64. In the Braggin' Rights game, the Tigers trailed by twenty at the half, but cut it to four late in the game.  The Illini held on for the win. Mizzou continues to miss Michael Porter, the top ranked player in the high school class of 2017 who had to shut down for the season after a back injury.

Memphis 83, Loyola - MD 71.  Memphis head coach Tubby Smith beat his son GG, who is the head coach of Loyola.  Memphis is 9-3.

Georgetown 89, Alabama A&M 49.  The Hoyas are 10-1.
George Washington 58, Harvard 48.  Harvard is only 5-7, but they have played seven games on the road, going 1-6.
Louisville 74, Grand Canyon 56.  Given the charges against Louisville for paying money to recruits, strippers and hookers, and Grand Canyon's "for profit" status, there is a money joke here somewhere, but I can't think of a good one right now.
Boston College 78, Richmond 73
Georgia State 71, Chattanooga 48
Illinois State 72, Evansville 66
Auburn 89, UConn 64
Dayton 79, Wagner 67.  Dayton only 6-6 so far this season.
Minnesota 90, Florida Atlantic 60
USC 89, Middle Tennessee State 84
Princeton 64, Akron 62

Mid Major Win of the Day:  New Mexico State 63, #6 Miami 54.   NMSU is solid, with a record of 11-2, but undefeated Miami was the favorite to win tonight and take the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.

Honorable Mention:  Not a big upset like some of the others we've had this week, but underdog San Francisco beat Nevada 66-64.  I root for the Dons as one of those former private school powers, similar to the Titans.  This was a good win for them.

Merry Christmas! Today the only games were part of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.

#15 Miami 84, Middle Tennessee State University 81. The Blue Raiders of MTSU led by 13 in the first half but Miami took the lead for good with 3:19 left in the game.

Davidson 91, Akron 78

USC 77, New Mexico State 72. In the game following their upset of Miami, NMSU lost a back and forth with another high major.

Princeton 77, Hawai'i 63. Not a mid major/high major upset, but on a night with limited choices, this game gets the Mid Major Win of the Day. Princeton won a road game against a team that came in 8-3.

Scores from December 27, 2017.  No Horizon League games tonight, but there were some interesting match ups, including the opening of Big East play.

#1 Villanova 103, DePaul 85.  Omari Spellman had a double double for Nova.  He was a highly ranked recruit, but before he got on the radar of the big schools, one of his first offers was from U of D.
#6 Xavier 91, Marquette 87  Detroit kids Greg Elliot (8 points) and Jamal Cain (16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks) contributed for Al McGuire's old team.
Butler 91, Georgetown 89.  Lavall Jordan is off to a good start in his first year at Butler.  Georgetown blew an 18 point halftime lead in the double overtime loss.
Syracuse 62, Eastern Michigan 47.  Tie game at the half, but Cuse pulled away in the second half.
Wisconsin 82, Chicago State 70
Grand Canyon 100, Morgan State 74
Nevada 80, Fresno State 65

Scores from December 28, 2017.  The  Horizon League season began tonight with all of the home teams except one defending their turf.

Green Bay 95, Detroit 83.  Detroit drops their eighth in a row.
Wright State 65, UIC 61.  Wright State gets a win behind a double double from Grant Benzinger, who also had four steals.
Northern Kentucky 77, IUPUI 59.  The Jags suffer an eighteen point loss in their first HL game.
Oakland 76, Milwaukee 68.  Good road win for the Grizz, who got 36 points from Kendrick Nunn. Isaiah Brock returned from injury issues to grab 11 rebounds and block six shots.

Titan Opponents:
Virginia Tech 76, North Carolina 59
East Tennessee State 84, Tusculum 65
Fort Wayne 99, Olivet College 93
Lamar 86, Houston Baptist 68
Seattle 93, Grambling 63
Murray State 80, Eastern Illinois 52

Top Twenty Five:
#20 Gonzaga 81, Pacific 48
#23 Seton Hall 90, #25 84 Creighton

Mid Major Win of the Day:  Hartford 60, Rutgers 58. Rutgers killed all the momentum they had with the update of Seton Hall by following it up with losses to Stony Brook and Hartford.

Other Games of Interest:
Providence 94, St. John's 72.  Providence strikes back with a big conference road win.
Indiana State 73, Valpo 64. Welcome to the MVC.
Belmont 94 SE Missouri State 72
LSU 71, Memphis 61
St. Mary's 87, Loyola Marymount 59.  Paul Westhead and Bo Kimble aren't walking through that door.

Scores from December 29, 2017. The Horizon League season has begun, but YSU and CSU both had buy game commitments to fulfill.

#2 Michigan State 111, Cleveland State 61. We know the Spartans are good, but the margin in this one was still surprising. The Spartans shot 65% from the floor and 58% from three. This game was 25-6 before I turned it on. Cleveland State falls to 3-10.

Indiana 79, Youngstown State 51. The Penguins are 2-11, with their only wins coming against sub D1 competition.

Titan Opponents:
Toledo 85, Penn 72. Nice road win for the 8-5 Rockets.
UCLA 96, Washington 82. UCLA improves to 10-3 and keeps the momentum from their upset of Kentucky.

#7 West Virginia 85, OK State 79
#11 Kansas 92, Texas 86
#22 Texas Tech 77, #18 Baylor 53. Not surprised that Tech won, but the margin is notable.
#16 Kentucky 90, Louisville 61. Same as above. UK winning isn't a surprise, but that's the first time they have beaten the Cardinals by 20 in over twenty years.

Other games of interest:
Eastern Michigan 67, Rochester College 48. EMU, 9-4, was up 23 at the half.
Central Michigan 91, Lawrence Tech 73
Iowa 98, Northern Illinois 75
Maryland 66, UMBC 45
Nebraska 71, Stetson 62
Kansas State 91, Iowa State 75. The Big 12 teams are going to eat each other up.
Utah 66, Oregon 56. Oregon is finally fielding a relatively weak team.
Washington 88, USC 81
Oregon State 76, Colorado 57. The Pac 12 is looking kind of weak this season.

Not much to choose from for Mid Major win of the Day. I'll go with Toledo, for picking up a road win against a strong Ivy league program.

Scores from December 30, 2017.  The HL season is fully underway.

Milwaukee 87, Detroit 79.  The Titans kept it close most of the way but were outscored 14-6 over the last part of the game.  The Panthers hit 55% from the floor and 50% from three.  The Titans were again led by Chatman, who had twenty points and eight rebounds.

Green Bay 80, Oakland 79.  Big win for the Phoenix and a bitter loss for Oakland.  The Grizzlies are still struggling to put it together.  Kendrick Nunn cracked the 30 point barrier again, but in a very inefficient way.  He took a lot of shots to get there. Brock had 11 rebounds and six blocks for OU.

Wright State 60, IUPUI 52.  The Raiders played a sloppy game with twenty turnovers, but managed to get the win against a bad IUPUI squad.

Northern Kentucky 86, UIC 51.  What has happened to the Flames?

Titan Opponents:
LaSalle 83, St. Louis 60.  Billikens fall to 7-7.
Seattle 95, UC Riverside 71.  Seattle is 11-6.
Fort Wayne 92, Concordia (MI) 59
Western Michigan 92, Chicago State 71
Michigan 76, Jacksonville 51
New Orleans 64, Houston Baptist 57
Murray State 87, SIU-Edwardsville 63

Other Games of Interest:
Butler 101, #1 Villanova 93.  That realization that maybe you hired the wrong Michigan assistant coach.
#6 Xavier 77, DePaul 72.  More hoop heartbreak for me.
#12 Oklahoma 90, #10 TCU 89.  Trae Young with 39 points and 14 assists.
Minnesota 65, Harvard 55
Illinois 62, Grand Canyon 58
Duquesne 70, University of Dayton 62.  The team whose logo we stole beat the team who goes by U of D.
Marquette 74, Georgetown 65

Duquesne 70, University of Dayton 62.  The team whose logo we stole beat the team who goes by U of D.

Eric Williams had 15 pts,7 rebounds and 4 assists for Duqesne. Coach Alexander chose to pursue Skylar Nash instead of the local guy.

I don't know good Eric Wlliams is defensively. We don't need another 15 point scorer; we need more defensive-minded players. At this point, it's all about TEAM defense. I would continue the "play defense, get minute" philosophy and that goes for everyone including Allen and JJJ. If we don't develop a culture of defense-first, nothing else matters. Put all the points on the board you want, but it's meaningless. If you score 47 points in the first half, you should have the lead going into the break.

Eric Williams is an athlete so at least he has the ability to play D. It depends if his coach can earn his ear. It's a lot more difficult to play D if you are slow and Athletes can run past you

Scores from December 31, 2017. The HL took New Year's Eve off. I did, too, which is why this scoreboard update is relatively late.

Titan Opponents:
East Tennessee State 74, Mercer 55
Syracuse 68, Virginia Tech 56
UCLA 74, Washington 53

Top Twenty Five and Other Games of Interest:
#2 Michigan State 108, Savannah State 52. This was actually close for awhile. In the end, MSU had scored 100 points for the fourth straight game. Miles Bridges had 21 rebounds, the most by a Spartan since Greg Kelser grabbed 27. Michigan State moved to #1 in the nation with Villanova's loss to Butler.

#16 Kentucky 66, Georgia 61. Pontiac's Yante Maten had 17 and 12 for the Bulldogs, but it wasn't enough.

#21 Cincinnati 82, Memphis 48. Ouch. Hoop pain for me.

#23 Seton Hall 75, St. John's 70

#25 Creighton 83, Providence 64. Despite rumors of the death of the conference a few years ago, Big East basketball is alive and well.

Missouri State 67, Valpo 50. The Crusaders fall to 0-2 in the MVC.

Utah 66, Oregon State 64

SMU 79, South Florida 39

USC 89, Washington State 71

Oregon 77, Colorado 62

Happy New Year! Scores from January 1, 2018. (Yeah, I almost typed 2017.)

Only one HL game on the calendar. In fact, a very light schedule overall.

Youngstown State 80, Cleveland State 77. Flint's Cameron Morse hit a three pointer with .6 seconds left to win it. CSU's Bobby Word, who scored 24 today after scoring 26 against Michigan State, had tied the game with a late trey. It will be interesting to see which of these teams makes the most progress towards being a contender in the coming years.

Top Twenty Five and Other Games of Interest:

#6 West Virginia 77, Kansas State 79. Big road win for WVU. Any Big 12 win away from home is going to be an impressive one this season.

Texas 74, Iowa State 70. See above.

Quinnipiac 71, Siena 70. Just looking for an excuse to use Quinnipiac in a sentence that wasn't about polling.

Alabama A&M 71, Grambling 64. Crazy college basketball. Grambling beat Georgia Tech on the road and lost at home to a 0-13 Alabama A&M team.

Prairie View A&M 76, Alcorn State 64. Clubber Lang and BA Baracas's alma mater with the win!

Texas Southern 78, Southern 66. TSU got their first win of the season in their first home game of the season after 13 straight losses on the road. And that's also the Mid Major Win of the Day.

JJJ seems to hustle on defense, but other than trying his best to get in people's way, he doesn't seem to have much upside on the defensive side of the ball. Usually, I expect to see a bigger threat to steal the ball out of the undersized PG, but he doesn't give me that vibe. His minutes are based on his superior shooting abilities. :D

I called out Eric Williams at the HS Finals last year. Was hoping we'd have taken a chance on him.

Better late than never:   Scores from January 2, 2018. (Still can't believe how quickly 2017 passed by.)

Only one HL game on the calendar. And the result was a surprise.

IUPUI 67, Green Bay 63.  Maybe that game at IUPUI is going to be tougher than I thought it would be.  All the more reason for the Titans to take care of business at home.   We'll give the Jags the Mid Major win of the day for pulling the road upset.

Titan Opponents:
Michigan 75, Iowa 68.  Michigan doesn't have one of their better teams of the JB era, but I think they will do well in this year's Big Ten.
Western Michigan 87, Akron 75. Broncos are 9-5.
Buffalo 104, Toledo 94.  Our neighbors to the South fall to 8-6.

Top Twenty Five and Other Games of Interest:
#5 Xavier 86, Butler 79.  Good game from two of our old conference mates.
#18 Texas Tech 85, #10 Kansas 73.  Great win for the Red Raiders, who haven't beaten Kansas in forever.  If you saw this game, you saw the difference between an experienced team lead by seniors and a talented, but immature younger group.
Florida 83, #11 Texas A&M.  Gators with the impressive road win.
#16 TCU 81, Baylor 78.  Maybe I overestimated the difficulty of Big 12 teams winning on the road...
#22 Arkansas 75, Mississippi State  78.  Good win for the Bulldogs, where former Titan coach Ernie Z is still on staff.
Auburn 94, #23 Tennessee 84.  Another top 25 upset at home.
Wisconsin 71, Indiana 61.  When was the last time both of these teams failed to make the NCAA tournament?
Ball State 72, EMU 62.  EMU takes the loss in Muncie.
CMU 75, Ohio 50.  Central looks pretty good.
Vermont 62, Harvard 56.  Harvard still trying to figure it out.
Louisville 77, Pittsburgh 51.  Former Vandy coach Kevin Stallings is feeling the pressure in Pitt, and got into a shouting contest with Cardinal fans.  Not a good look.
Nebraska 70, Northwestern 55.  NW proving to be one of the most wildly overrated teams in the preseason.  I saw them ranked as high as 15 in the nation.
Georgetown 90, DePaul 81.  Two of my favorite teams of the 80s mix it up in 2018. I'm old.

The Bonnies and Dayton with the rare tie.
Actually Dayton won 82-72. Just kidding you over the typo. You (and the Commish) do a stellar job with the score recaps and game previews

I can remember when we used to have those types of things. Sadly, it seems we will need to run a streak up to 15 or 20 games before we start drawing a crowd that provides us additional advantage.

Remember when Perry and the boys ran up a 39 game home winning streak back around 2001 or so. Those were the days. The players had so much pride in playing on their home court and defended it hard. Hopefully one day we can get back to that.

I was thinking of that Titan home court winning streak when they mentioned the Seminoles streak last night. What a run that was.
