Saturday, February 10:
Horizon:
Youngstown State 84, IUPUI 80. Cameron Morse, who's had a very disappointing senior year, had a season high 28 in the road win. His previous high this year was 26. Last year, Morse had 8 games with more than 28 points, and another 4 with 27.
Milwaukee 74, Wright State 73. Milwaukee led by 17 with just over 5 minutes to play, then held off a furious Raider rally. Grant Benzinger missed a jumper at the buzzer that would have given WSU the win.
Northern Kentucky 86, Green Bay 80. Northern Kentucky takes a 1 game lead over WSU. The two will square off in Dayton on Friday for 1st place.
Cleveland State 86, UIC 78. A big road upset for CSU. The loss drops UIC 2 games behind NKU for first. And CSU's win drops the Titans into sole possession of last place in the conference. Freshman Tyree Appleby had 25 points and 9 rebounds for the Vikings.
Non-Conference Opponents:
Western Michigan 69, Ohio 60. WMU is 15-10.
Virginia Tech 61, #2 Virginia 60 (OT). Tech (18-7) scored the last 5 points in the OT to nip Virginia (23-2). The loss snapped the Cavaliers' 15 game winning streak and a chance to move to #1 in the polls.
Arizona State 88, UCLA 79. Big blow to UCLA's PAC 12 title hopes. They trail Arizona by 2 games.
St Louis 70, La Salle 62. St. Louis is 14-12.
East Tennessee State 70, VMI 56. ETSU (22-4 overall) stays unbeaten (13-0) in the Southern. With Virginia and St. Mary's losing, the Bucs have the nation's longest winning streak.
Murray State 75, SIU-Edwardsville 66. The Racers (20-5) sit atop the OVC.
Omaha 90, Fort Wayne 85.
Seattle 91, Chicago State 81. Seattle (17-9) has been quite a bit better than I thought they would be, though losing by 30 is still inexcusable. Chicago State is looking for a new president, if anyone is interested.
Nichols State 94, Houston Baptist 67. Whaddya think? Could the Titans beat Nichols State?
UM-Dearborn 67, Madonna 63. Checking in on our NAIA opponents, we find UM-D at 18-11.
Rochester 59, Siena Heights 54. Siena Heights is 12-14, but the Saints gained a spot in the Titan record books this year.
Other Games:
#4 Michigan State 68, #3 Purdue 65. State (24-3) trailed most of the day, but Miles Bridges delivered a game winning three in the final seconds. Purdue (23-4) loses its second straight after 19 consecutive wins.
Akron 69, Central Michigan 63.
Bowling Green 70, Eastern Michigan 63 (OT). EMU (14-11) blew a big early lead.
#1 Villanova 86, Butler 75.
#5 Xavier 72, Creighton 71. Quentin Goodwin made two free throws with 1 second left as Xavier (23-3) won on the road.
#7 Texas Tech 66, Kansas State 47. I suggested 2 years ago that if Ray were canned, we should try to land Chris Beard, then at Arkansas-Little Rock. "No, no," came the near unanimous reply. "He's not committed to Detroit." "He moves around too much." "We'd only have him for a couple years." Moot point--we almost certainly wouldn't have landed him anyway. But in two years he's moved Texas Tech to a 20-4 record and their highest ranking ever. I fully expect Bacari back next year. But if he can't turn things around, I do hope next time we go into the market we look for a young but proven winner--someone like Chris Beard, who has won everywhere he's gone. He won as head coach at Fort Scott CC, at Seminole JC, in the ABA, at McMurray University, at Angelo State, and at Arkansas-Little Rock. He's still just 44 years old. Would a guy like that move on after just a couple years? Who cares?
#8 Auburn 78, Georgia 61. Tigers (22-3 and 3 games up on Kentucky in the SEC) are arguably the biggest surprise of the year in NCAA hoops.
Baylor 80, #10 Kansas 64.
#12 Gonzaga 78, #11 St. Mary's 65. Every time I watch Gonzaga, I remember us beating them in 1999 and think, "why not us?"
#13 Arizona 81, USC 67.
#14 Ohio State 82, Iowa 64. Who is atop the Big 10? Why, 22-5 Ohio State, of course.
Alabama 78, #15 Tennessee 50. Quite the dismantling by the Tide.
Iowa State 88, #17 Oklahoma 80. Freshman Cameron Lard had 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Cyclones (13-11). Sooners have lost 6 straight road games.
Oklahoma State 88, #19 West Virginia 85.
#21 North Carolina 96, NC State 89.
#22 Wichita State 95, UConn 74.
#23 Nevada 83, San Diego State 58.
Texas A&M 85, #24 Kentucky 74.
Boston College 72, #25 Miami 70. Jim Christensen has BC (15-10) headed for its first winning season since 2011.
Notre Dame 84, Florida State 69.
Loyola 75, Indiana State 71. In their fifth year since abandoning the Horizon, Loyola (21-5) is driving towards an MVC title. They lead the conference by 2.5 games with 4 to play.
George Mason 72, George Washington 65. Anti-Federalists beat the Federalists.
Harvard 76, Penn 67. Harvard (12-11) fights their way into a first place tie with Penn (17-7)in the Ivy.
St. John's 86, Marquette 78.
Navy 68, Army 59.
New Mexico State 74, Grand Canyon 70. The win over 2nd place GCU pretty well wraps up the WAC regular season title for NMSU (22-3).
Louisiana Monroe 89, Georgia State 82 (OT). That snaps Georgia State's 10 game winning streak. The Panthers had rallied from 16 down in the second half to force the OT.
