Horizon
It was a terrible night for the Horizon, which entered the day ranked 21st in NET, and 24th in RPI.
La Salle 72, Wright State 70. Ed Crosby scored on a put-back with 1 second remaining to give La Salle (3-2) the win at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Worse for Wright, Loudon Love injured his right arm and sat out the second half--we'll have to see what the diagnosis is. The biggest lead in this game was 6 points. Billy Wampler and Jaylen Hall each had 15 for WSU (5-2).
Southern 83, IUPUI 77. Marcus Burk had 27, but it wasn't enough for IUPUI (2-5). Burk has averaged 26.5 points over his last 4 games.
Canisius 94,UIC 64. Godwin Boahen's terrible season continued with a 1-13 shooting night, and UIC's terrible season continued as the Flames (2-5) were routed in a tournament at Boca Raton. Canisius won its third straight after opening the season with a pair of losses.
Colgate 99,Green Bay 81. Colgate (4-3) never trailed, led by 22 at the half, and coasted home. Jordan Burns had 40 points for the Raiders. The Raiders made 19 of 35 three point attempts. Freshman Amari Davis led Green Bay (2-4) with 19.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents
Notre Dame 91, Farleigh Dickinson 66. Six Irish scored in double figures and John Mooney and Juwan Durham each had double-doubles as Notre Dame (6-1) romped past FDU (1-5).
#21 Colorado 71, Clemson 67. Colorado entered the game shooting just 60% from the foul line, but hit 24 of 25 to beat Clemson. The Buffaloes (5-0) overcame a 12 point second-half deficit, and with Clemson (5-2) trying to set up the winning score, stole the ball with 10 seconds left.
UC-Irvine 92, Louisiana 67. What does one make of the results in Vegas: Detroit over Irvine by 12, Irvine over Louisiana by 25, Louisiana over Detroit by 19. Irvine (4-4) shot 61% from the field and put six players in double figures today.
TCU 64, Wyoming 47. Desmond Bane had 22 points and 11 rebounds and TCU (5-1) never trailed Wyoming (3-5).
Drake 59, Northeastern 56. Drake (5-2) shot just 32%, but won the turnover war 19-9 and made 15 of 17 free throws. Jordan Roland led Northeastern (3-4) with 13, but that was 14 below his season average and dropped him from 1st to 3rd amongst the nation's scoring leaders.
Pacific 78, SIU-Edwardsville 50. Pacific (6-3) led by 32 at halftime. Something tells me our Titans will get at least 1 more win before conference play. SIU-E is 2-5.
Some Other Games
#3 Michigan State 93, Georgia 85. Freshman Anthony Edwards had 37 points for Georgia, but Cassius Winston answered with 28 for State. The Spartans rolled up a 21 point halftime lead. The Dogs (4-2) cut it to two in the second half, but couldn't catch the Spartans.
DePaul 88, Central Michigan 75. It was like two different games in Chicago. Central (5-2) dropped 50 points on DePaul in the first half and led by 18 at the break, but the second half was all Demons (7-0), who scored 56 after the break.
Seattle 59, Western Michigan 55.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Stephen F. Austin 85, #1 Duke 83. I'll let you go to the sports pages for the recap of this game. Close, exciting, and obviously a huge win for SFA (5-1).
#4 Kansas 71, BYU 56.
#18 Auburn 79, Richmond 65.
Three Matchups of undefeated but unranked teams today:
Butler 68, Stanford 67. Butler won in a hotly contested game Kansas City. After Stanford (7-1) scored 5 straight points to take a one point lead with 20 seconds to go, Kamar Baldwin hit a jumper with 8 seconds left to put the Bulldogs back on top, and Butler (7-0) stole the ball on Stanford's final possession.
West Virginia 60, Northern Iowa 55. West Virginia (5-0) held NIU (6-1) without a field goal for 7 minutes in the second half, overcoming a 15 point deficit to win.
Dayton 89, Virginia Tech 62. Tech's glow from beating Michigan State was short-lived, as Dayton (5-0) hammered the Gobblers (6-1) in Maui. Obi Toppen led Dayton with 24.
George Mason 85, Nebraska 66. Until the late scores came in, this looked like the Mid-Major Win of the Day. I have always thought that if I were in charge of my school's non-conference schedule, one year I'd try to set up a "Early American Statesmen's Schedule," with George Washington, James Madison, George Mason, Robert Morris, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, and your blow-out, non-D1 game against Patrick Henry.
New Mexico 59, Wisconsin 50.
Wichita State 70, South Carolina 47. Wichita State is 6-0.
San Francisco 89, Hampton 73. San Francisco advances to 7-0. Hampton's Jermaine Morrow, the nation's #2 scorer, had 23.
