Sunday, February 16

Horizon
Wright State 106, IUPUI 66. The Raiders absolutely smashed IUPUI today, scoring the game's first 16 points and rolling up a 37 point halftime advantage. Coupled with UIC's thumpin' of Northern Kentucky, Wright State (23-5, 13-2) has some breathing room in the Horizon race, and the season finale at Northern may not even matter.

UIC 73, Northern Kentucky 43. Good UIC (13-15, 8-7) showed up today and trashed the NKU, holding the Norse to just 18 points in the first half while rolling up a 25 point margin. Northern (19-8, 11-4) shot just 22% from the field, including 4-32 from outside the arc.

Other Titan Opponents
Boston College 71, NC State 68. The Wolfpack's NCAA hopes take a big hit up in Boston.

Important Games--Games you wish the Titans played
Michigan 89, Indiana 65. Two bubbly teams.

Mid Major Win of the Day:#4 San Diego State 72, Boise State 55. Is SD State a mid-major? No matter. This one was over by halftime in Boise. In its quest for a perfect regular season, SD State (26-0) has a couple home games, then closes on the road against a good Nevada team.

#14 Villanova 76, Temple 56.
#17 Oregon 80, Utah 62.
#21 Iowa 58, Minnesota 55.

Cincinnati 70, East Carolina 67 (OT). Cincy's third straight overtime game, the last two of them wins. UC (17-8) is now tied with Houston atop the AAC.

Friday, February 21

Horizon
Detroit 84, Green Bay 67. The Titans are 9-32, including 0-4 against Oakland, since last year's 5-1 start in conference play.

Oakland 75, Milwaukee 68. Xavier Hill-Mais had 23 points and 11 rebounds for OU (11-17).

Other Titan Opponents
Buffalo 104, Kent State 98 (2OT). Anthony Roberts had 34 for Kent State (17-10)and Jayvon Graves 33 for Buffalo (18-9) in an exciting game in at Kent.

Other Scores You've Been Waiting For

St. Louis 80, VCU 62. St. Louis (19-10) looks like a likely NIT team.
Harvard 61, Princeton 60. These two are a game in back of Yale in the Ivy.
Iona 70, Rider 69. Despite the win, the Gaels (10-13) are looking at their first losing season since 2009. They've averaged 22 wins a season since then.

Mid-Major Win of the Day: Merrimack 64, Sacred Heart 57. In its first season in D-1, Merrimack (19-10) has a win over a Big 10 team (Northwestern) and sits atop the Northeast Conference after knocking off Sacred Heart (16-12) tonight.

Saturday, February 22
A bloody day for the nation's top-ranked teams, with three of the top 4 losing, ending 19, 23, and 28 game winning streaks.

Horizon
Northern Kentucky 61, Youngstown State 59. YSU (16-13, 9-7) came up just short in its attempt to sweep league leaders Wright State and NKU. The Norse (21-8, 13-4) led by 9 with just over two minutes left, but the Penguins went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to two on a pair of Garrett Covington free throws with 37 seconds left. NKU turned it over on its possession, but Dairus Quisenberry missed a three point attempt with 1 second remaining.

Wright State 81, Cleveland State 74 (OT). After trailing for over 32 minutes, CSU (10-19, 6-10) forced OT with a late rally culminating in a game-tying three with 4 seconds left in regulation. To no avail, as WSU (24-6, 14-3) pulled away in OT. Wright State and Northern Kentucky will meet for the regular season Horizon title next Saturday.

UIC 77, IUPUI 72. Marcus Burk had 28 points but IUPUI (6-23, 2-14) lost again. UIC is 14-15, 9-7).

Other Titan Opponents
Ball State 64, Eastern Michigan 55.
Toledo 68, Western Michigan 59.
Bowling Green 62, Ohio 61. Detroiter Justin Turner hit a jumper with 2 seconds left, completing a BGSU rally from 16 down.

#23 BYU 91, #2 Gonzaga 78. An impressive game for BYU, which held off every Gonzaga rally in the second half. Yoeli Childs led the Cougars with 28 points and 10 rebounds. BYU is 23-7 overall, but 15-2 when Childs has played, with a 1 point loss at San Francisco and an overtime loss at Utah. As the season has gone on, Gonzaga's non-conference schedule, while solid, doesn't look nearly as tough as it did at the time. Wins over Washington and UNC have lost their lustre, while the 18 point loss to Michigan, though certainly no black mark, looks considerably worse than it did in December. Gonzaga (27-2) is still a likely #1 seed.

#8 Florida State 67, North Carolina State 61.
Clemson 82, Boston College 64. The Wolfpack of NC State (17-10) and Clemson (14-12) both remain on the fringe of the at-large discussion, with the Tigers having no margin for error.

UC-Irvine 87, Cal-State Northridge 64. Irvine (19-10 overall) leads the Big West by 3.5 games. If they win the conference tournament, the Titans will at least be able to claim one win over an NCAA team this year--and if NKU wins the Horizon, maybe two.

Northeastern 77, Drexel 68. High scoring Jordan Roland had 25 for Northeastern (14-14).
Wyoming 78, Air Force 72.
Murray State 59, SI-Edwardsville 58.
Louisiana Monroe 83, Louisiana 77. This is a big rivalry in Cajunland.

Other Scores
Michigan 71, Purdue 63. Franz Wagner had 22 for UM (18-9).
Northern Illinois 82, Central Michigan 81 (OT).

#3 Kansas 64, #1 Baylor 61. After trailing almost the entire game, Baylor (24-2) rallied from a double digit deficit to within a point with 18 seconds left. But Isaiah Moss hit a pair of free throws to clinch the win for Kansas (24-3). Udoka Azubuike led the Jayhawks with 23 points and 19 rebounds. The loss snaps Baylor's 23 game winning streak.

UNLV 66, #4 San Diego State 63. The Aztecs (28-1) were so close to an unbeaten regular season, but the Rebels (15-14) took it to 'em in their own gym. The Rebels never trailed after Michigander Amauri Hardy nailed a trey about 90 seconds into the game, and led by double digits for much of the game. The Aztecs tried, cutting the lead to one point with 17 seconds left on a three pointer by Malachi Flynn. After the Rebels made free throws, SD State got a final chance to force OT, but Flynn's three was off the mark. A Rebel rebound was followed by a turnover with 2 seconds left, but the Aztecs were unable to get off a final shot.

#5 Dayton 80, Duquesne 70.
#6 Duke 88, Virginia Tech 64.
#10 Kentucky 65, Florida 59.

#11 Louisville 72, North Carolina 55.
#12 Villanova 64, Xavier 55.
#13 Auburn 73, Tennessee 66.
#14 Oregon 73, #24 Arizona 72 (OT). Musta been a good game to watch, but I didn't watch it.
UCLA 70, #18 Colorado 63. UCLA (17-11) rallied in the final minutes to win its 5th in a row. That's their longest winning streak in 3 years.

TCU 67, #17 West Virginia 60.
Providence 84, #19 Marquette 72. Providence (16-12) may yet sneak into the NCAAs. A win next Saturday over Villanova may clinch it.

Memphis 60, #22 Houston 59. Memphis (19-10) kept its NCAA hopes alive when Precious Achiuwa made one of two free throws with 28 seconds left, and Houston's Caleb Mills missed on the game's last possession. It's amazing, when you think of it, how thin is the difference between successful and unsuccessful seasons.

Mid-Major Win of the Day. Army 86, Navy 75 (OT). Do UNLV and BYU qualify as mid-majors? If not, we'll go with this game. It lacks the cachet of a football matchup between the academies, but it's still quite a rivalry. Army is 14-13, 9-7 in the Patriot; Navy is 13-14, 7-9 in the Patriot.

Sunday, February 23

Horizon
Detroit 79, MIlwaukee 73. The Titans (7-22, 5-11) salvage the finale of a 4 game home stand. Nice games from Willy, AD, Boe, Marquis. Gorman was cool as ice water with the clinching free throws. Lotta turnovers.

Oakland 92, Green Bay 88 (2OT). OU (12-17, 7-9) came back from a 10 point halftime deficit to lead by 7, lost it, and got to OT when JayQuan McCloud missed with 2 seconds left in regulation. Green Bay (14-15, 9-7) led the entire first overtime, by as many as 5, but couldn't hold it. With his team down 3 with 5 seconds left, Tre Maddox made the first free throw, intentionally missed the second, and Xaiver Hill-Mais got the rebound and the tying put back. Green Bay led most of the second OT, too, and was up two with under 30 seconds to play. But Hill-Mais hit a three for the lead, and after a Green Bay miss added a couple of free throws to put the Grizzlies up three. With 3 seconds left, McCloud went to the line and made the first. He intentionally missed the second, but the Phoenix couldn't match OU's trick--Maddox got the rebound and made free throws to clinch it. Hill-Mais finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds, and Daniel Oladapo added 17 points and 17 rebounds for Oakland. All 92 Oakland points came from their starters.

Other Titan Opposition
Notre Dame 87, Miami 71. Notre Dame (17-10) got 19 points and 12 rebounds from John Mooney.

Other Crucial Games
#25 Ohio State 79, #7 Maryland 72. If you were at all worried about OSU (18-9) making the field, worry no more.
Indiana 68, #9 Penn State 60. Big win for IU (18-9), but it was at home. The Hoosiers are just 2-6 in true road games, which keeps them on the bubble.
#15 Creighton 81, #21 Butler 59. Creighton is rising fast--are the Jays peaking a couple weeks early?
#16 Seton Hall 81, St. John's 65. Seton Hall (20-7, 12-3) stays a game up on Creighton (22-6, 11-4) in the Big East.

Cincinnati 67, Wichita State 64. Big win for UC (18-9). Both teams look good for the field of 68 right now, but neither can afford many slip-ups.
Wisconsin 79, Rutgers 71. Ditto the above comment.

Northern Iowa 64, Southern Illinois 52. UNI (23-5) ends a little 2-game skid that might have cost them a chance for the MVC's first at-large bid in 4 years. But beating second place SIU today was good.

St. Peter's 73, Rider 54. The Peacocks (15-11) remain atop the MAAC, a half game up on Siena.

Mid-Major Win of the Day: South Dakota State 85, South Dakota 80. The Jackrabbits (22-8) clinch the regular season title in the Summit.

Horizon
Wright State 64, Northern Kentucky 62. Wright State clinches the Horizon regular season title with a win in Covington. The Raiders never trailed in the second half, but they never led by double digits and the Norse closed it to two with 13 seconds left. They fouled immediately on the in-bounds, but the guy they fouled was one of the league's best free throw shooters, Cole Gentry, and he calmly sank a pair from the line. Loudon Love led Wright State (25-6, 15-3) with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jalen Tate had 24 points and 9 boards for NKU (21-9, 13-5). Both teams will have a double bye in the HL tournament. This is also your mid-major win of the day.

Other Titan Opponents
Ohio 76, Kent State 69. Jason Preston had 18 points and 10 assists as the Bobcats (15-14) got back over .500 with their 5th win in 7 games. Kent's swoon continued with its 5th loss is 7 games. The Flash are 18-11.

Other Games
#4 Dayton 82, Davidson 67. Obi Toppin had 23 points and 12 rebounds as Dayton (27-2) clinched the A10 regular season title.

Yale 76, Penn 73.
Harvard 77, Columbia 69. Yale (21-6) stays atop the Ivy, a game up on Harvard (19-7).
