Games 5 & 6: Titans vs. Wright St.

Thought I’d start out a general tread for posts on the upcoming weekend series against Wright St., preseason favorites in the Horizon League. Here’s the preview article from the Raiders’ official website:

The DetroitTitans.com preview has not yet been released. I anticipate hopefully seeing Tulane transfer Koka on the Detroit Mercy roster.

Both games will be broadcast on ESPN3.

With the expected return of Chris Brandon from the injury list, the Waterman waiver, and Koka transfer with immediate eligibility, the Titans now have an additional 20’ 8” of player height to insert in the lineup. Don’t know if all three are ready for game action, but should be fun to watch what develops.

To underscore the obvious; our defense was poor. As we all know, effective defense is heavily based on effort and our effort was weak. Wright State shot 59% from the field which included 50% from 3 point range. Many of those three point shots were uncontested.

On a positive note, I thought Marquell Fraser played well and Buay Koka looked solid for his initial appearance in a Titans uniform.

The only way we are winning game six is if Twon finds his shoot. He needs to make the three to open the floor back up or just push the ball and play in transition but either happen that much in the second half. Wright State clogged the lane and that was the end of it. Guys looked like they were defeated and that is how they played.

Extremely disappointed in Mike Davis Jr.'s halftime radio interview with Dan Hasty. In regards to next weekends IUPUI cancellation, he said the series got cancelled because "Covid or they don't want to come here or whatever". IUPUI is simply following protocol due to positive Covid cases, and to imply that they don't want to play and are chickening out is ridiculous and irresponsible. We're in the middle of a raging pandemic. Those players and coaches want the games to happen, they've only played one game. Plus, it's not like we're the Horizon League powerhouse that teams are trying to avoid an automatic loss. Be better Mike- you just sound silly.

I also thought it was bush league how he started the interview off crying about how Wright State was holding and grabbing UDM. He claimed for every foul Wright State committed, we got 3 called on us and that "we don't even teach that". Well I hope you don't, you're a D1 program. Regardless of anyone's opinion on if it was a well-officiated game or not, as a coach it's his job to teach his players to rise above that and control what they control. Apparently follows his dad's footsteps crying about the officiating, who cost us a technical in each game this weekend. Again, winners don't make excuses Mike. Be better.

I thought we played with greater intensity on Sunday, unfortunately we faded in the last 5 minutes of the game. Isiani getting into early foul trouble really hurt; in 10 minutes of action he committed five fouls and had zero points and zero rebounds.

Regarding our performance. there were definitely some favorable aspects:

We had 6 blocks and 9 steals.
Kuol & Johnson shot the basketball very well.
Chris Brandon displayed talent and energy in his 23 minutes of playing time.
Although Antoine continues to struggle shooting (3 of 18 from the field), his assist-to-turnover ratio was 3x.
