From a 1/2/20 Detroit News article on restaurant openings on the horizon in 2020:

“Kuzzo's Chicken and Waffles re-opening: This hot spot on Detroit's Avenue of Fashion decided to close and renovate while the street and sidewalks out front were also getting an overhaul. It's been a construction project that has plagued many businesses on that strip. The neighborhood destination, which has all-day breakfast, is shooting for a February return and is now hiring staff. 19345 Livernois, Detroit.”

Link to MetroTimes article “Black-owned Detroit restaurants you should have tried by now.” Five of the places listed are on Livernois just north of campus, a couple more on McNichols. Just in case someone is looking for a place to dine out next week.

Legacy City Group is renovating a vacant commercial space at 7316 W. McNichols to open the Detroit Pizza Bar, restaurant that will hire and train local residents for food-service careers and support local farmers. The project involves 4,500 square feet of space and will cost $1.3 million when completed. It’s three and a half blocks west of campus.

The developers’ vision “is of a space that welcomes the community, and it is driving their design choices. Large glass windows and a shaded rooftop deck ensure the community feels visible and connected to the new developments happening along this commercial corridor targeted for Strategic Neighborhood Fund investment. With a varied menu and high-quality, locally-grown ingredients, they will provide healthy, delicious food options for a variety of palettes with both affordability and community support in mind.”

During the virtual Roundball Luncheon today, someone asked a fun question to Coach Davis inquiring if he has had a chance to try a Detroit Coney Island since his arrival in town. He said he hadn’t, but during the coronavirus situation he frequently enjoys getting a carry out order of catfish from Bosco Fish & Seafood. The restaurant is located right across campus at 16227 Livernois.

“Detroit's largest cannabis dispensary, Leaf and Bud, readies for 4/20 grand opening”

(From the L&B website: “The flagship Michigan Leaf and Bud Provisioning Center is located on Livernois Ave—aka the Avenue of Fashion—just south of University District, home to the University of Detroit Mercy. We look forward to providing Metro Detroit the best medicinal cannabis products and shopping experience available.” Mapquest shows the dispensary is approximately 1.1 miles south of campus.)
